Who remembers the Clippings feature?

dedtired

I pulled out my stash of printed recipes prior to Thanksgiving. Today I decided to weed them out before putting them away. In the pile I found many that I printed from CF, saved using the clippings feature. It was so handy to simply click and save a recipe from this forum. I guess they gave us fair warning that it would be going away, since I seemed to have printed them out. Ah, the good old days. I have never used the Bookmark feature. Where does it go once it is bookmarked? I suppose I should give it a try.

I remember the clippings, although I never remembered to use it, LOL. I've never used the "bookmarks" either, and now that I hear rumblings that Houzz might ditch the forums, I'm glad I just cut/copy/paste anything I want to save.

I think they moved the clippings to bookmarks, so you should definitely check it out.

Yep that's where they are. Go to your account, click on "your houzz", then go to bookmarks.

I would just like to know if there is a way to go to the last read post when opening up a thread instead of scrolling through, trying to figure out what I read already. It's tedious.

Um. Sort of. It's not reliable, and I'm not sure if it's the forum software that's unreliable or if it has a conflict with my unusual browsing environment, and I don't know if it's the latter that does it or the forum. So maybe?

Put the index into preview mode. There are a couple of boxes just above the thread listings on the upper right of the index. One has several green lines in it, the other has two, I think. Click the fewer, fatter ones. That will show an expended view of the index with the first photo of the originating post on the left, and the first two lines worth of characters of the last post in green, under the headings. (If the sentences are short, the lines are mooshed together in the preview.) Click the green preview lines. It often takes me to the last place read, rather than to the last message, especially if there are quite a few messages I haven't seen. I don't know if it'll work for you, but it's worth a try.

May, (lowspark) when you open the page and click on the post you want to read, hit the END button. That takes you to the bottom. HOME takes you to the top. This works on any website. They're my most-used buttons :-)

Yikes, Annie, I haven't heard those rumblings!

Jasdip, Thanks. :) Problem is I don't necessarily want to go to the end. I want to go to the next posting after the last one I read. So say I read post 10. The next time I visit that thread, there are now 17 posts because 7 have been added. I don't want to go to 17, I want to go to 11. In other forums I've been on, it remembers that 10 was the last one I read so when I click "new" it takes me to post 11 automatically.

plllog, I probably should know this but I don't know what preview mode is. :)

Sorry. I was in a rush and didn't explain it well and thought you might just need a reminder. On the index page, the list of threads, at the top of the names of threads it says :

26,566 Garden Web Discussions | Cooking

Latest Activity

Including that box, which I didn't know was going to paste in. You can filter the messages with that drop down arrow, but it's only really useful where there's too much traffic or too little, and latest is the GW way. :) Next to the box that says Latest Activity are two small clickable boxes. One has two horizontal bars and the other has three. Click on the one with two bars, on the far right, and you'll be in "preview" mode. There will be a larger than thumbnail of the first photo in the originating post, if there is one, or a blank box with shadow chatting heads, on the left of each thread listing.

To the right of the photo box will be a clickable thread title, with the poster's screen name (clickable to go to that person's profile) and the date, followed by number of comments. Under that is the preview of the last post with the last poster's avatar, clicable screen name, time of post, and first two lines of the last post in clickable green. The spacing is off but I've pasted it below. If you click the first two lines of the last post you'll either go to the last post or to the last one you read. I just can't predict which. I think it's gone to the middle most when there are a number of posts past when I last read one. It may just need the pointer to be down a page or something, to go to the last read rather than the last posted. Anyway, try it. Can't hurt. If you want to go back to the more thread titles per page index, click the box with three bars in it.

Ah! Plllog, thank you for the detailed instructions!! I see it now.

Unfortunately, all it did was bring me to that last post. :( Oh well. I suppose that at least gives me an option to either go directly to the first post or directly to the last.

I've gotten spoiled by some other forums which are paginated and remember where you left off, making navigation much easier.

On a mac, you can do Command+Down arrow to go to the bottom of the page but that's not the same thing, either. Still, in long threads it's faster to scroll up than to scroll from the top.

As for the rumors of the forums going away, I also think this possible for some forums. They've been folding the ones they want, like Kitchens, Baths, Home Decor into the icky Houzz format, but I don't think it bodes well for the forums they aren't messing with.

As for clippings, I've lost so many pages over the years. Even when iVillage had GW they tended to lose that database fairly often. Put not your trust in bookmarks.

Just now, it brought me right to the last point. Unless it was Firefox that did it. I do think there must be enough after your last read to be scrollable so it doesn't rub up against the pagination. Maybe try it a few more times?

Oh sorry, Lowspark. I always hit End to go to the bottom and scroll up. It's still generally faster than scrolling all the way down to where you last left off.

I just hit comment and it takes you to bottom of page, then I scroll up.

I do remember the clippings and used that feature often. I liked that you could print out a recipe so easily. Now I bookmark, but should safeguard what is important because it could disappear so quickly.

Yeah. Depending on how much of the thread I've actually read, it might be better to start at the top. If I've read a lot of it, I should start at the bottom. If not, then from the top. Or if I've read about half, well, then it doesn't matter.

Thing is, I don't always know that when clicking.

I'm on another forum where it remembers the last post you saw and has a link called "new" that you click for any given thread and it takes you right to the post after the last one you read. No scrolling and searching. I got spoiled by that. :)

Shirl, a conversation was going on about how Houzz was changing the most popular forums and people felt that they would eventually be gone. There was a discussion about what else we could do or where we could go if that happened. Some suggested a private Facebook page, but of course, I don't "do" Facebook and I certainly don't want to start. I guess we'll see what happens.

I don't think it's an "imminent threat", but mostly conjecture at this point. Here's the thread, but I know it's been discussed on other forums too. Which reminds me, I miss Tamara!
