I guess I should have said, by coping, I mean the curved metal coping that vinyl pools have. Will removing the concrete affect the track where the liner fits in?

I think my coping sat on top of the trac..

Oh, THANK YOU, Aces! I went to your album and that will be most helpful as we start this repair job. If you had not needed to replace your liner, would it have made the job more difficult? (Trying to protect it during the process) Or should we just factor in that we will need to replace it? Same with the steps. Did the old ones remain structurally sound after the concrete was broken up?

I honestly don't know if it would've made more difficult or not. Steps needed to come out due to hairline cracks, but structurally i'm sure it would've been fine. I am no expert but the concrete probably has no effect. I hope the photos help in some way

It's not a problem to replace or change the coping at that stage. When I build my own pool this year I filled the pool with water and then had the flag stone layed.
