Roses Shot, very sad, replacing all with new
Comments (16)Here in the low desert we have at least two different types of cane borers. One is a little bee that drill the perfect holes in the cut ends of the canes. I still swear that any cheap nail polish used as a pruning sealant can keep them out of the roses. The other type of cane borer is a flat-headed side borer. It's an ugly little creep that can kill a cane all the way down to the graft within very little time. The leaves are still hanging on the cane and the borer is all curled up at the bottom sucking the life out of the graft, I guess. Nasty, nasty things. We find them in the public garden, too and cut the whole cane off to the graft. I don't know any way to keep them out. I suppose a systemic might make the cane toxic to them. I don't use chemical controls at home or in the public garden....See MoreVery sad and unfortunate news
Comments (12)I'm so sorry to hear that Dan! Are they YOUR martin housing? My neighbor is just too arrogant and now he has Starlings in his trio! They're using an extended compartment and I suggested to him buy the trap for both HOSP AND Starlings, but he hesitated and said maybe try plugging the holes. I have removed their eggs and nest MULTIPLE times. I'm going to approach him again about it but be truthful and say he likely won't get martins this year. He's the same guy who came from the city, is crazy about his lawn, and sprays within 30 ft of my boxes! Luckily haven't lost any and last year contemplated relocating to another neighbor's...but the walk is too long ( A decent walk to a HUGE field) and I want the bluebirds near me. The boxes are currently in a large field right next door on my landlord's property (who are VERY friendly people!) I had to relocate 2 years or so ago due to problems with House Wrens. Moving them into the field eliminated the problem. Anyway, when I saw something dead whilst peaking through, I opened it up with shock and just shook my head in disbelief! Just my luck! I get bed-ridden ill and my neighbor sets a trap in his PUMA house and kills an non-target bluebird. PLEASE remember to check your traps every 1 - 2 hours AT LEAST! I can't stress it enough. Every last bluebird is precious, but amazingly I still have 2 female BBs after losing 3 this year. Bad luck in my neighborhood...even though I've put a HUGE dent in the HOSP population now!...See More@Patti43 Question about Your Peanut Butter Cookies
Comments (12)That's essentially the recipe my mother used all the time. They're great. She always used shortening. Nice and crumbly. My sister mixes butter and shortening. I usually use the butter flavored shortening. Also she never added the salt. Peanut butter generally has enough salt and if you use salted butter, that too has salt in it but use if you like. A suggestion to speed things up, just grab a bunch of the dough and roll it in your hands into a log shape about 1"-1 1/2" or however big you want them, then break off the pieces and set in the pan. Take the fork and go at them. My mother's recipe said to dip the fork in flour but I usually touch the fork to the dough then dip it in sugar. As you're breaking off pieces, usually 2-3 in the pan and one in the mouth. Love that peanut butter cookie dough!...See Morepatti 43 says: ' What's for dinner, Saturday?'
Comments (16)I had a couple over for dinner. The plans were made early in the week, then hubby got called this morning to go play in a band, for today. It's a company picnic. and he's having a blast. He's phoned me a few times to tell me about it. So we carried on without him. Chicken Marabella with rice and broccoli, and chocolate-zucchini cake from a fresh zucchini. I made 4 loaves of bread today as well, and sent 1 loaf home with my friends....See MoreGranlan_TX
