Need ideas for pullout shelves I'm having made. Pics please!

My kitchen guy is going to make pullout shelves for me (they never came with the cabinet order, and now the 'carpenter' turns out to be him). I just assumed they would have fairly narrow sides, but he saw something at IKEA that he wants to copy, and it will be basically more like an actual drawer with chrome rails in front to 'see in' but still hold contents in place. That got me thinking- maybe I should find out what options are out there re 'pullout shelves'.

Most of these will be for an 18" wide and 24" deep Pantry. Two may be 36" wide for pots and pans (cuz I am now leery of his carpentry skills, and figure pullout shelves would be a safer bet than creating drawers- :>(

Please tell me what your pullout shelves look like, and post pictures if at all possible.

I don't know what your KD-turned-carpenter is planning on doing or how good he is, but if you search other threads people are happy w/IKEA hardware and design. I would ask to see some of his other work b/f allowing him to do this...especially since the fact that he's your carpenter came as a surprise to you.

I personally think drawers are better than pullout shelves (as do many others on the Forum) but if you cannot have drawers, than pullout cabinets, IMHO, are still better than pullout shelves. Checkout the thread above for ideas.

If you research your options both on the Forum & at the Rev-A-Shelf and HÃ¤fele sites, you'll find hardware for all sizes of cabinets and a lot of ideas. My contractor also replaced for me all the base cabinet shelves into pull-out. It was done on the middle shelves only. I also added a new custom built cabinet which also has 2 middle pulled out shelves. Here are a couple of photos...

I don't have any pix to show you but my GC is making pullouts for me also. I would think higher sides would be preferable to hold things in place. This is really great for me because he is creating them in 30 year old cabinets that are getting new doors.
