All-wood countertops

What do you think of wood countertops everywhere in the kitchen -- even at the sink? I'm thinking painted, lacquered actually, which is pretty durable. I'm asking not from an aesthetic standpoint, but from a practical usage one.

It occurred to me today when we brought in a wood top we have from a desk, and put it on our new yet-to-be painted cabinets (so that we can move our temporary kitchen into our kitchen.) I'm liking the look and feel of it there a lot. Maybe it's just relief to have a place to set something! :-) But what with my crumbly granite issue (in another posting) I'm thinking of other possibilities. Not to mention that it would cost less.
