Please Help! What color should I paint these cabinets?

tarafreitag

Please give me some suggestions or opinions.Just bought this 80s style house. we don't have much money after buying it now so we are just going to paint the cabinets. I was thinking off white or dark brown. I have no clue on colors or style. We are new homeowners with a toddler and on a budget, but we are putting bamboo floors in. They already put new granite countertops which we are keeping, they are like browns and tans. We are taking that big white cabinet out as well. Appliances are staying too till we can buy new. Please help me on what color to paint the cabinets and brands. aslo what color for walls. Pictures please. Thank you

A closeup of the granite would help. Whatever you do, you'll probably want to change or at least paint over the tiles too, since they look to be that same pinky color that clashes so badly with the granite.

What exactly are you doing with the white cabinet on the left? How big is it? Any chance of moving the fridge into that space so it's not right next to the stove?

If you are not doing anything other than paint, I would look at a blue/green and take it to the ceiling. Are the BS tiles pink or reflecting the overall kitchen color?

Do some research and wander through Houz, etc. Also there is a kitchen gallery here to look at. A lot of painted cabinet kitchens.

You are putting bamboo floors in the kitchen too, correct? A cream color cabinet would look good with the granite.
If you are considering a brown, I would look into gel stain. Not sure if it would work on your pickled, but many have had good results.

Agree with the gel stain because the grain will still show through, even when painted.

Painting your cabinets and getting new floors will go a long way toward giving you a fresh, new look. I would paint the cabinets a creamy, white (not too stark, but not tan).

Then if at all possible, I would change out the backsplash. I hesitate saying this, as your budget is tight and it is hard to really see what they look like in your picture, but they also appear to have a pinkish-beige look. Your backsplash area and soffit area would look nice painted in a pretty color to be determined of course by your accessories and other colors in the rest of the house.

A close up of the counter and backsplash will help. Also, other colors/style you might be using in adjoining rooms.

thanks everyone I really appreciate the help. This is the backsplash. I was thinking of ripping it out and just painting the wall or painting over it for now. Aslo so everyone is thinking a creamy white instead of a darker brown stain??? Im so confused.. Yes we are thinking of bamboo floors or just normal colored wood floors not dark

I personally loved painted cabinets, white and bold colors! Maybe you will find something to inspire you here on my Pinterest Board.

Personally, although I don't know your taste obviously or the feel of the rest of the house, but I would do some fun, brighter color. Have fun, go to a Sherwin Williams or Benjamin Moore store and pick tons of samples up and see how you feel about the colors next to your countertop. Just my two cents! Good luck!

I love white kitchens, but I think it's a lot easier and a lot less work to gel stain cabinets, especially with the black appliances.

Tara - those colors you like would look lovely in your kitchen I think. Just one thing to note, is really check out the white you choose for how it looks in your kitchen and with your countertops before committing to one. You can search on this forum and see the many tones that white can have in rooms based on lighting and when next to other materials. Would definitely recommend buying a sample pot and testing it out on a door if you are painting yourself before beginning the whole job. A couple that seem to be popular in Benjamin Moore are White Dove, Cloud White, Simply White.

I think the gel stain kitchen looks great too! Good luck with your decisions.

Here's also a link to a thread that shows a couple of photos of white cabinets with countertops that seem to be similar in tones that might be helpful.

The black appliances look much better with the dark cabinets. It looks like your dining table is a pretty dark color. You might want to use the color on the cabinets. I cannot imagine blues or greens with the gold granite. I am not too sure about painting walls and cabinets with a cream against the gold either. It depends on the cream color like the others have said.

On the link, click on color schemes and the other areas on the left. Maybe you can even find your granite. Click on kitchen styles to get some more ideas.

I could live with the floor unless it is pinkish too. Are those 8" floor tiles? They look small to me. I think you will miss that pantry with the white door. I would change the door though. I don't like louvered doors in a food pantry...if that is what it is. I agree that the refrigerator needs to be moved away from the oven.

The pass through by the pantry looks like it might have counter seating. With a baby it might not be useful. I am not fond of the open part under the uppers. Not sure what you could do about it if it does have a counter.
Maybe you could remove the tiles on the backsplash then paint the wall. I would fix backsplash and cabinet color first. Maybe see if refrigerator could be moved somewhere else. I would also see about removing the vent fan in the front wall and putting in an over the range hood. The ceiling fan looks a little modern but with dark cabinets it would look good. You can always cover the kitchen floor with a rug. Not really good in a kitchen, but it would lesson the impact if those tiles are pinkish.

thank u, my husband said we are defently going to paint them cream or a off white due to it would be way to much work to strip and stiain them. He said painting them brown wouldn't look very good either. The kitchen is actually a lot bigger thanit looks, these pictures are from my inspection so the homewoners furniture is in it. If u can see past the tall white cabinet there I a balck table that is the rest of the kitchen. The dinning room is on the other side. We are going to take out some of those cabinets and make that a island. We want to move the refridrater as well. So now that its decided to be cream cabinets I just need to pick which color white and walls. The floor is going to be replaced with medium color hardwood. The backsplash is going to be painted for now. I really do like that link you had sent me on wall colors. So do u think I should just keep the walls like a tan if Im doing light cabinets

I'd go with creamy white for the cabinets (SW Dover White or BM Linen White) and a soft gray for the backsplash and walls. Test the grays with your granite, as some lean toward blue, and others lean toward brown. Something warmer (more brown) would look good with your granite. I wouldn't worry about matching your colors with your appliances, since you will likely change those in time. Black is classic and looks good with everything. White is more problematic for appliances IMHO. (That said, I'm putting in white appliances in my new house! I have green cabinets, and it works.) Your neutrals will be light and lovely. There's nothing worse than a dark kitchen. I know because my old kitchen had black countertops and dark cabinets, and I had to keep the lights on even on bright sunny days. So depressing! Keep it light!

tarafreitag, I used Duran's Almond White. I got the idea for the color from someone here. Duron paint, however, was no longer available but my local BM shop had the specs in their system and matched the color. The picture above really doesn't reflect the color well: it is "true" ivory. I am very happy with it.

I lived with two tone cabinets for 9 years - White on the upper cabinets and dark grey on the lowers. I love it so much that I'm doing it again for my remodel. This time it will be white painted shaker on top and Ikea espresso brown on the bottom. That way I don't have to work so hard to keep the bottom white cabinets sparkling clean and the white and airy uppers make my small, low ceilinged kitchen seem bigger and brighter.

With your dark appliances on the bottom and young kids, it's something to ponder.

    Good luck!

I, too, think two-tone with dark lowers, cream uppers would be great. That incorporates both the black appliances and the white fridge.

All will look different in your light so you might have to try some samples, although I realize you may not have time or energy to try 16 different samples.

When choosing a brown, gold or tan in a hurry the best advice I have heard is to go about 2 shades lighter and 2 shades more grey than the color you like on the chip. Otherwise it will get very intense very fast. Something that looks pretty grey on the chip will look very colorful on the wall!
