Texture / color combo for guest bedroom -

My place has a yellow thing going on throughout. The hall outside this room is yellow. The bathroom nearby is grey with a purple undertone.

I'm thinking of using this comforter, which I already own, in the guest room.

I'm uncertain about the texture and color of a window treatment, though. I'm trying to strike a comfortable and easy vibe, and the comforter is about as fussy and delicate and high maintenance as I'm willing to go. So maybe the comforter is out.

There is so much beige ground in the comforter that I'm not sure any color besides the brown-green or sage would work with it, even though there are many other colors. The brown-green does nothing for the wood floor or the furniture. So is sage the only choice? A solid rectangle of sage at the window feels wrong, but if not solid, then what?

I keep thinking I'd like a plum{{gwi:807}}, but it sends shivers down my spine to think how far wrong I could go in that direction.

There are at least two shades of purple in the embroidery, but they are so intermixed it just doesn't feel right to me to pick out one of them and slap a big hunk of it on the window.

I want to put ready-made 84" lined pole-top panels in the room. I don't want any of the faux silks I have seen -- I don't want a hard shine like that, although the comforter seems to call for a tiny bit more shine than linen. Would this discontinued Restoration Hardware{{gwi:807}} chenille texture work? It's called ivory.

I'm thinking I can't use them because of all that beige ground.

If you have any suggestions, I'd love to hear them.

What color is the wall in the guest room??
I think the comforter is beautiful!

You could go with the soft blue that's in the butterfly...

Annie, the walls are still just primed. I'm doing this one in the right order!
I think velvet is the best choice, a little sheen to meet the embroidery thread's challenge, a little lux, but plenty of thick 100% cotton to make me feel comfortable and relaxed.

Blue, pimento olive and moss all look good in velvet, don't you think? So should I try to find blue drapes as accent and paint the walls some kind of yellow for continuity with the rest of the house? Or should I stick with the lower contrast formula that a yellowed or grayed green would offer.

The whole house is pretty shaded, fwiw.

Since you're trying to work with ready-made draperies, I would keep the wall color similar to the background of the comforter. Then, you can use any draperies you find in blue or yellowish green. I like your idea of using a velvet. That sounds scrumptious. I don't know what hue of yellow you have in the hall, but I imagine the yellow-green leaves in the comforter will help keep some connection between the bedroom and the hallway.

I think a brownish shade on the walls would set off the quilt beautifully and flow with the yellow in the rest of the house. I also think it will be almost impossible to match the background and you may find the quilt looks less special that way.

Do you have the bed skirt too? If so, I would think about the green in the bed skirt for the windows.

Did you see this picture with light walls?

Yes, I had yellow walls with it in the last place, and it looked ok. The beige just neutralizes and is not a problem.

But I never did have window treatments that I liked with it, and the ones that I did put with it in that house have now gone to the dining room, where they work much better.

I'm thinking a nice cotton sateen would work, too, maybe even better than the velvet.

But I'm still kind of ambivalent about finding new drapes for an old comforter.

It's still a current-looking design and very pretty, but if you don't like it anymore, then I agree you shouldn't go to the expense of choosing draperies and paint to work with it.

    JR, it's Waterford Kiara/kiana/kieran.

Kieran is the old name, I think.
