It arrived a bit cold, but just fine! Was out late for work last night and took a quick peek this morning! Chance already snagged her pressie! Will post details and pix later tonight! I can hardly wait!

Sure seems like I spent most of my life in the Rockies bumping into Urtica diorca while involved in one activity or another, not just while rearing lepidoptera on it. Believe it or not, your fingers do get used to it if you are spending the day wild collecting eggs or larva and you learn to just ignore it. Could be Vanessa atalanta (RA) or Aglais milberti (MT) on your nettles, but not Adelpha bredowii (CS). The later uses Quercus (oak) for the larval food plant. Speaking of Urticaceae (the nettles), some of you may or may not know that the primary host for Vanessa tameamea (Lepelepe or Kamehameha) in Hawaii is Pipturus albidus (Mamaki), which is a nettle that doesn't have the urticating hairs common on most of the wild nettles on the mainland. A project I had always wanted to do and just never got around to was establishing Mamaki in my gardens and seeing if the local nettle feeders would use it on their own naturally. Might be a fun project for any of you who live where you can provide the right conditions for Mamaki. A way to raise the nettle feeders without the sting maybe.

You guys have got to get a truck. Suja, I'm not even done at 27. The thing is, although I have to make 27 trips, I do it on the way home from somewhere. Shovelling down into a wheelbarrow is a heck of a lot easier and quicker than trying to load it up into one. Plus, I have the Golden Pitchfork, my very favorite tool. I cannot IMAGINE ever again shovelling mulch with a shovel. What a nightmare I did for 2 years! Watergal, I have a friend who is a landscape architecht and a violent opponent of mulching. She's even published several articles on it. She insists it's a product of builders who cut down all the trees for the McMansion developments and have to find something to do with the byproduct: chipped up wood. She swears no where else in the country do they mulch like we do. I could go into the evils of why not to do so, but that's another thread. However, with as much land and garden as I have? I couldn't not mulch. I'd lose my tiny mind weeding. Or pretending to weed. However again, I've found myself looking for and planting ground covers that are now growing on the mulch. Plumbago, that aggressive Creeping Jenny, gorgeous vinca 'Trehane', and believe it or not, in my new (whisper) pink garden? I'm moving 'Lipstick' strawberry to be the ground cover. I've considered Vlad's strawberries in the big gardens, but decided they'd attract more of those evil rabbits. I decided plumbago and my favorite, low-growing chocolate mint (yes, mint) are the answer. Love them! So there you have it. I"m relived Lynne isn't "done". How awful for her that would be. (g) Plus, we'd have to kill 'er and bury her under the rose bushes. Christine

Thank you all for your comments. I am especially glad to hear of the problems you've had, so I can hopefully avoid them. I think that getting them properly trained is the key to preventing running full-tilt out of the area, so we are working really hard on that. We're on a battery plan, so all 4 collars get free batteries for one year. That will get expensive next year, but well worth it. Part of the fence goes through my front garden, so I will have to be extremely careful about not digging it up. I will never feel confident enough to leave the dogs out unsupervised, due to possibility of being stolen, attacked by other animals, attacking other animals (Tatya is quite the birder, much to my horror) etc. I just want them to be able to play together in the yard with us and be able to run around like mad fools if they wish. K'Ehleyr won't go anywhere without me anyway, she's perfectly fine being off-leash and has been several times pre-fence while I've been gardening and such. I'm not even 100% sure she can hear the beep. She may end up not being on the collar, because if I can't train her it isn't fair for her to be shocked- she wouldn't know what she should be doing. She's our old Rottie, and like our previous Rotties, she's not going inclined to run off. Well, she can't even run anymore, it's more like an amble... I thought Ana (5 year old Husky) was going to be a problem. She HATES correction (we're still on beep and leash only, no shocks yet) and got really scared yesterday. So we changed to pure positive reinforcement with her today, treats for retreating from the fence, and that has worked great. Yesterday when she approached the fence and made it beep, we did the leash correction as instructed but she got so scared that she just sat down and wouldn't move. Ana is really smart and has already figured out not to go near the fence in most cases, so right now we are just reinforcing the safe area with her. We'll see how she does with temptations... I don't think Max has connected the beep with going back into the yard yet. He sometimes does it correctly and loves the praise when he does, but he isn't consistent yet. Max's focus on life is fun, and he doesn't taking learning opportunities very seriously. I have to figure out a way to get him to connect the beep with going back into the yard in such a way that he understands. Of course, getting Max to understand anything is difficult- he's not the brightest bulb in the pack. Tatya (2 year old Husky) is the real reason we got the fence to begin with. She's our super-fast flight-risk Husky. We always worry that she'll slip out the door when people are coming and going. She did in fact slip out at Thanksgiving at my mom's house and had 9 people, 2 dogs, and 2 vehicles chasing her for almost an hour before she was finally caught. Obviously she is not off-leash trained, but that's impossible without some sort of containment, and we don't have dog parks close enough that I could use on a regular basis. She is doing really well with the beep training so far, and I've restarted her other training for reinforcement (sit, stay, come, etc) and she's doing well. I'd LOVE to get her agility equipment- she'd be great at it and we would both love it. But that's for when I'm VERY confident that she is well-trained for the fence and off-leash first. Ana and Tatya played a bit together in the yard today, still on leash of course. They had so much fun, but ended up hopelessly tangled up. They will be so happy to be able to do that without getting tangled. Max has been having fun playing fetch in the yard, but it would be more fun to be able to throw the stick further than the length of the leash. K'Ehleyr probably won't get much use out of the fence really. She'll most likely just follow me around or lay in the sun, which is perfectly fine with me. I am encouraged by how well they are doing for the most part. DH and I have been training them twice daily as instructed. The fence people are coming back next week to turn on the shock correction, once all the dogs are ready for it. We are probably going to put K'Ehleyr on a delay (beep first, wait a second for her to move, then shock if she's still at the fence line) and see if she gets it. If not, then she just won't have the collar. Before I had read about it, I thought the training was all punishment-based, but it is not. The dogs get rewarded for retreating back into the yard when they hear the beep. And I'm glad that they don't start with the shock until they know what they are supposed to do. Gives them a chance to not get shocked. So it's turned out better that what I thought so far. We'll see how it goes once they start getting to off-leash training.

Good call on the tiny TC pots at craft stores. I also have really good luck collecting terra cotta, glazed and other randome cool small pots at Goodwills, here in the Bay Area Goodwill and other larger thrift stores seem to have 3-4 pots I can use each time I visit. Also will put in a thumbs up for Mountain Crest gardens, have bought from them 3-4 times and always a good experience. And since you said you are a newby, you might want to look into sempervivum, if you haven't already. They do well in our climate and are fun to mix with the other succies you mentioned here. OK I snagged about 2 minutes this morning amid the hustle and bustle to take a peek, and I am dying to get back after work.....I can not believe how excited I am, and pumped to do another one!!!!!

This is our first time doing pictures so I hope they work...OK they are not working HELP.

Doris sent a wonderful theme of "Southern Breakfast" just what we need on a cold winter day. Here is the details of a great big box I opened this morning...

Fosters Market cookbook - really fresh looking seasonal recipes with lovely pictures and she included menus from the market that book is based on
Blueberry muffin mix - gonna be great for snacks
Buscuit Mix - I am not a big baker so these are right up my alley
Grits mix - we have never tried them so this will be an experiement and one I can't wait to try after all the threads on the topic
Cool orange juicer - Chance quickly hi- jacked it and juiced an orange and a small grapefruit
Texas Pete hot sauce - DH loves spice so he will enjoy that
Mini Non stick muffin tins - actually I was just thinking I might need these and was thinking about buying some!
Doris' hand made Peach Orange Marmalade - mmmmmmmmm can't wait might have to have some toast tonight
Ham - I kid you not she included sliced country ham that looks really good.
North Carolina mug - with a lovely cardinal on the front and apple cider mix
Magazines from her area - they look really interesting, real estate, parenting and Southern Living (how did she know I love looking at real estate!)
Jambalaya mix with cheese - she knew we could not get it up here so we are really going to savour it
finally, a stunning hand made by Doris oven mitt- I love earthy hand made things in my home, and this is really lovely.

She also sent up a little package of posters and markers for Chance. She included a personalized note about the package and herself which reinforced what a lovely person she is.

Doris thank you for a wonderful theme and a personalized package. We will be thinking of you this Saturday while we try out the treats!

Awww, Chance is such a cutie. Just as cute as I pictured her. My DD loved those fuzzy posters until she was 12 years old. I thought Miss Chance might like one too.

There are a couple of recipes in the book that call for country ham. Or just pan fry the ham slightly and plop on a biscuit.

I looked everywhere for stone ground grits. The only place I did not get to was Southern Season and they had them I'm sure. I bought those grits at Fosters Market. Haven't tried that brand before - I was looking for Anson grits. Hopefully they will still be good. The hot sauce can be used on grits or use a dab of butter. Whatever you do, do NOT put sugar on them. :)

The oven mitt should work very well. I have one that I use often.

The Zatarain's Rice was an after thought. You mentioned in a thread that you loved this particular one. So, low and behold, there it was in the grocery. I could not resist putting a couple of boxes in your package.

I hope you and your family enjoy these things. I know I had so much fun getting to "know" you and shopping for you. :)

I never saw ham packaged like that either, that's unique and Doris's peach jam is very, very good. It'd be great on those biscuits.

I tried some of that wonderful marmalade on toast last night and now can not wait to try it on the buscuits! It was so good and peachy!

And I used the oven mitt when I drained the potatoes to mash them!

What a fun idea that Doris sent you a Southern breakfast way up north there in Canada. I think the cookbook looks fascinating. . . please share any recipe successes!

I enjoyed seeing the photo of Chance - you mentioned you had a little girl just like I have little ones, too. She looks so happy with her pressie. My girls love those fuzzy drawings and will spend a lot of time doing them.

Oh my goodness I cannot beleive Doris made the oven mitt. It looks like a really useful one that actually allows you to hold on to the pots and pans. Great job Doris on a wonderful selection of goodies. The homemade are always the best and you have both canning and sewn or knitted.

Janet, Chance is so cute and happy looking. I think it is fitting that the photos are big, gives us perspective on how big her grin really is. btw, to reduce the size of photos in photo bucket click on the edit tab above the photo after it is downloaded and select resize. If you look at my thread on the package I received form Teresa the photo right on the page is reduced to 75 % of the original size and all the links are 50 % of their original size. 25 % was just way too small. Still, I enjoyed your photos the size they are.
