We love the American. Sadly, I did indeed have problems with the Wolf AG. I am so glad you did not have issues.

Yes, we used them both prior to the Wolf departing our home. I am so pleased with the American compared to the Wolf. The performance has been great. The burners do what we need them to do. And, actually, I find cleaning the American MUCH easier that the black top of the Wolf. Also, the oven is larger.

I like the control of the knobs better too. The Wolf has points to turn to and the American does not. There is also an indicator light for each burner and the range...pretty handy.

I easily recommend the American if you are considering it. Let me know if you have specific questions and I will be glad to answer!

Well It seems we are having a gas leak problem with the new American range. We were away for a week and when we walked in the door on Saturday we could smell gas and it was very strong in the kitchen near the range. We aired it out and called the gas company and they confirmed it was coming from the range or connectors. We had a plumber come today thinking it was from the gas line which had been relocated or the connector tube but he checked it all out and $200 later concluded it was from the range itself. I called Josh at Dvorson's and I am waiting to hear from the service rep to set up a time to hopefully fix it. Meanwhile we are range-less. We are eating alot of frozen entrees from Trader Joe's, not bad but I want my stove back. Has anyone had this problem or heard of it? I hope it is easily fixed. I'll let you know what happens.

Mcferg...oh no! Glad all is ok and that you caught this quickly.

We are not having a leak issue but I do notice a small smell of gas right after you light the stove (2 mins or so) and then it goes away. I did ask American and they said it was normal. But the weird thing is that prior to the new oven guides, there was no smell, replaced the guides with the new ones, now it smells? Did you have any smelling before actual leak?

Hi,
We did occasionally get a whiff of gas before this episode, but it was random. I never noticed it when the range was in use or after it was just lit. I didn't think much about it as it was infrequent and brief. We are still waiting to hear from the American service rep. Let you know how it goes.

alex - yes, they are the guides for the oven racks. The original ones had a lot of surface cracking/peeling after we did the oven burn-off. I contacted American immediately and they shipped off new ones right away.

We had removed the racks before the burn-off, but not the guides. These have not had the same issue. We had little smell from that after they were used the first few times, but that has worn off.

We are so excited about our new 30" American Range. We installed it yesterday, but it has a problem. The ignitors don't stop clicking once the gas is lit. It just keeps clicking and clicking. We have called both the company and the retail outlet, but of course, no one has a service person working on Saturday. Any thoughts? Anyone else had a problem like this?

WOW! Looks like there are a lot of new American Range owners since I started the first thread! I'm glad to hear everyone seems to be happy with their range and that there are lots new owners!

I'm been out of touch for a while. Work has been crazy busy and life in general has gotten busier.

I was suppose to get my 48" American Range this week but it hasn't arrived. I called the retailer and now I'm told it should be in next week. I'm waiting for the range to arrive so that I can ship all my appliances at once. The contractor will start installing my floors after the appliances get installed.

I'll keep everyone posted!

Here's an update on our "clicking" American range. I wanted to post this so that if others have this problem in the future, you can check for this. It turns out that we had to change the polarity of the outlet. The wires were crossed inside the electrical outlet. Once that was fixed (which was easy) it is working perfectly. We're doing the burn off now and super excited.

Hi all, I'm shopping for a 30" gas range. This will be my first major appliance purchase and I'm as nervous as I am excited about it. I've pretty much narrowed my options to American Range or DCS, which both stretch my budget a bit. I finally saw the American in person today and I was very impressed. By reading through this discussion I found answers to most of my questions, but I have a couple more. First, how do you like the broiler? Has anyone used the griddle accessory? Also, I'm concerned about the gas leak reported by mcferg626. Any news? Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Are you all still thrilled with American Range?

adla i have a 48" wifey and i love it. no gas problems thank god, but as plumorchard said we due get a hint of gas when the oven first starts up. very slight and then it disipates. i think it is because of the way that the ovens are vented.another thing to consider is, does the DCS have alot of electronics that could fail, the american range is simple yet pleasing to the eye,just my opinion.best of luck

I need to decide on a range this weekend and I'm choosing between the 30" American and the DCS. One of my concerns is the broiler. I've read very good things about the DCS broiler, but I haven't been able to find much info about the American broiler, except that it turns off automatically when the door is open. Is this very annoying? Does the broiler work well otherwise? Any other factors I may have overlooked? Thank you!

YES, the gas leak is fixed. It was a small leak in a connector in the right side of the back of the range. Josh from Dvorson's got the service going. Bert called me from American Range(THANKS JOHN for the email to him) and connected me with Eric, our local service guy from San Leandro. He came on Wednesday and did a great job, found and fixed the leak. He checked out the whole range and all is well. He said he has not had many problems with gas leak or other issues with the American Ranges.
We are so glad to be cooking again! We really like this range. We have used the broiler once and it did a great job. The turning off issue wasn't a problem to us as it turns right back on when you close the door. the oven is terrific and we use the convection mode all the time.
Good luck with your choice. We would still recommend the American Range, I don't know much about the DCS .

my wife went away this week and my daughter and i really put the range to the test. we cooked ,broiled, baked, griddled and i will clean it up tomorrow before wifey gets home.we had a blast and it worked well. no i'm not lazy i was just curious how it will clean-up after a week with us.

Hi again, now that I've ordered my American Range and other appliances, I have to decide about extended warranties. I've never purchased appliances before, so this is all new to me. I think I will get the EW for the fridge and dishwasher because I've heard so many horror stories. But I don't know about the range and hood (30" Zephyr Venezia). Did anyone get the EW? Why/why not? Please advise. Thank you! Oh, I should mention that while I am handy enough to follow instructions, I wouldn't trust myself to troubleshoot any major problems. Thanks again!

Adla, congratulations on your purchase, I really think you will like this range. We are so glad to be cooking again. I simmered up some corned beef and cabbage today and it turned out great.
I thought about an EW but didn't get one. We do have an extra year of warranty because we bought the range on our American Express card and they match whatever warranty the company gives. We did it to get starwood points and the warranty was a nice bonus. good luck with the rest of your decisions!

So, a little funny but here is our report on the first use of convection! My son and his friends picked out some frozen fried cheese sticks from BJ's for a snack at his sleepover. Well, they were pretty darn yummy! The convection did a great job and they weren't all soggy or overdone. Now, I need to try some other things!

Here's the latest on my range.

I received a call today from American Range (they were returning my call). It seems that they're having problems filling the ranges with grills. The company that they were working with for the broiler for the grill has gone out of business so American is now working with someone else. They are saying that the grill ranges won't be available for another 8 weeks.

He did say that if I took the griddle, he could ship it next week.

I was going to get a 36", four burners and a grill. But when I went to the appliance dealer to look at the hoods, he told me that ranges with grills (or BBQ's as he called them) make a large mess in the kitchen and he HIGHLY recommends not getting one. So now I am hesitating on whether to get one or not. I live in Southern California and I have a BBQ outside, so maybe it is silly to get one on the range and it would be better to get the two extra burners.

Have you had any feedback, pro or con on getting the grill in your range?

plumorchard i convected the chicken and it came out great, also used it on some homemade pizza, i made the dough myself and it turned out ok. i'm better off buying the dough,lol! but it cooked fine. i never got around to cleaning it, got side tracked but wifey pulled out some zep commercial s.s. cleaner and wiped it up effortlessly. she says it's great stuff.she didn't even complain.....much.
Adla i got the ew only because i never had a range like this and didn't know what to expect.not to mention i bought it site unseen.if it isn't to expensive it can't hurt.

akarinz have you made a decision on what type of hood yet i'm still looking. my appliance guru said vent-a-hood is a good brand. but for the 48" it's like 1700. i believe...ouch.

Karin, I heard the same thing about the grill being a mess but I also heard that its great to have and use. Again, BBQing outdoors is great for a big gathering but to do one or two items I'd rather grill it indoors. We're installing a vent-a-hood, and from all the research (and I did a ton), the vent-a-hood will be a big help.

Johnny, it is a drag! I need to decide how much I'm going to let it interrupt my plans. I'm putting in hardwood floors and the contractor was going to install the flooring after the appliances were installed. Now I need to decide if I want the floors to go in before the range. It is a big range (48") so, I'm not sure it the flooring will get damaged when we move the range in. Any advice?

Adla, I bought the extended warranty for all my appliances. It goes for 4 years after the manufacturer warranty runs out. I bought it because I have to have it delivered months before I will be able to use them and I don't want to be stuck with a problem if I've only used it for 4 months. Also for me the price, I felt was very reasonable, $1000 for 4 years on all my appliances which complete 2 kitchens and 1 laundry room. Not bad!

Johnnytugs1, it has been frustrating for me in finding a hood, as I mentioned in my venting e-mail ;). One of my "personal" problems is that I am divorced, and work full-time and have one in Little League. So I don't have a lot of free time to go out and talk to different appliance dealers. THAT IS ONE REASON THIS FORUM HAS BEEN A GODSEND TO ME! I am going to try to get out to Pasadena tomorrow and find out about the Modern-Aire. The cabinet maker comes over tomorrow morning for a second revision of the cabinets based on my "new" list of appliances.

My biggest fear in getting the 36" American with the grill is the potential for making a "mess" in the house, via smoke etc. I am spending a LOT OF MONEY in having my kitchen redone and other remodeling. I don't want to have the grill cause problems for me in maintaining my kitchen and house, with smoke residue all over.

I have the 30" Modern Aire & love it. Ours had to be non vented/recirculated but we have had no problems at all. The company was great to work with and answered all of my questions. I know the vented hoods are much more effective.

Plumorchard or Jonnytugs, I am considering a floor model 30" american or the bosch hss7282uc prostyle(after a brief flirtation with a 36" Bertazzoni on a super sale 1700) but have a couple of questions I hope you might be able to answer. I am an avid cook BUT that being said, I am a messy cook and allergic(literally and in the sense that I HATE cleaning) to oven cleaners like easy off. (Thus my consideration of the Bosch self cleaning) How do you keep your oven clean? Second, I have a really small narrow kitchen so I don't have room for a warming drawer which means I use my oven as a place to keep things warm including plates til sauces are complete. (again enter the bosch which has a warming drawer) Thoughts? Am I crazy to consider the Bosch? The price for both is about the same maybe 150 more for the american plus 550 for the hood and loss cabinet space due to the relocated microwave. I am in analysis paralysis mode. Please put me out of my misery with words of wisdom! thanks.

Thanks for your response plumorchard. I loved the Modern Aire that I saw on Friday, but they were very pricey. I contacted American Range (thanks jonnytugs) and they e-mailed me the actual brochure for the range I am getting, that had very specific CFM information. So I think I will be brave and have the 36" range with the grill, even though the appliance person did not recommend it.

jwnmkm - re cleaning - the stove top wipes up very easily. The oven - I've heard Dawn Power Dissolver is effective but haven't been able to find it here. Do your allergies include the fume free version of easy off? I've noticed more and more "friendly" cleaning products lately. I really just try to wipe it down when I can. If I recall there are some cleaning instructions in the user's manual but I can't remember what they were. (You might could request a copy of the manual electronically)

The oven will turn down quite low and it works great to keep things warm. I've heard great things about the Bosch in stores and some here. One thing I would consider is whether or not it has a cooling fan that runs if the oven is on. If it runs all the time and is noisy, that would bug me. (Some do run to keep electronics, etc. cool)

We love the American and have no hesitations about recommending it. Good luck with your choice, let us know.

karin - I had problems finding one that wasn't pricey, that would fit, that was recirculating. It was tricky! You will love that grill, I bet!

ynsmom, thats why they call it hardwood, if it makes you nervous get the moving men(brand name)there are others too. get the bigger size it will displace the weight a little better.the 48" weighs 591 lbs. but if you remove the grates, racks, the doors are just a little tricky but i have removed them, and that may lighten it up about 100 lbs.but i truely think with just the moving men it will manuvure just fine with no damage to the floor. my floor is tiled and i used the moving men. when u get it forward of it's resting place plug it in (ck that the recepticle is wired correctly with a plug-in three lite tester to make sure the polarization is correct(2 yellow lites lit)the 3rd "red"lite unlit. then remove the moving men from the rear wheels and slide it back.(don't forget to connect the gas and brush soapy water over the gas connection)turn on gas ck for bubbles and put her in place. then take out the moving men in front.

akarinz, i went back and started reading some posts about using the grills and i think it will only smoke bad if it's not cleaned properly. i personally think if it will make you smile and feel warm and fuzzy GO FOR IT! worse case clean it real good & put a griddle cover on it and make pancakes, french toast, eggs, and the such or put a butcher block over it.
jwnmkm read the posts, big happy american range campers,lol.if you wipe up the mess with a wet paper towel you'll be fine. if it's baked on scrape it off leave a wet paper towel on it for a while and scrape off the rest. preferibly with a vinyl spatula of some sort so it doesn't scratch.
if you owned a stove before i'm sure you didn't auto clean the oven everytime. this is made well i think it cleans a heck of alot easier then the maytag i had. well at least watching my wife clean it anyway.oh, by the way she didn't realize i had used the oven as well while she was gone and she just cleaned it 4 days after i went back to work so it sat lke that for about 9 days in total.but after all her yelling, it took her longer to get over it then it did to clean it.lol yeah i was in the dog house.i just started talking about the new refridge and dishwasher she wants and it was all better.

I have been away from the forum for awhile. Our project is dragging out longer than planned. I had hoped we were going to break ground on our addition (which includes the new kitchen) last month. As it stands we are still waiting our a couple of bids and it will probably be more like late April early June befure we actually get to break ground.

The information on the original broiler company no longer being in business explains why I was told by one place that the ranges with Grills were not availabile. Since I am not in a hurry it is no impact to my timeline

Someone asked what I was quoted for the 48" range with Grill. I believe the price was $4895 but would need to hunt back through the emails to confirm.

I did purchase the 48" with the grill but have been unable to get American Range to provide an answer as to how the broiler in the grill works - is it the same broiler as is in the oven? If the broiler in the oven is on does that mean the grill is on?

I have not used a griddle or a grill on a range before but was at a Friends house with a 5 star range w/griddle the other day. I asked him about the griddle and how he liked it. He commented that the grill was great in theory but they never use it as it makes a huge mess.

In between talking with contractors, work, and everything else going on I have started to shop for other pieces of the kitchen - Hood, Sinks, In-Ceiling Speakers, etc.

We already have the refridge (Sub Zero), the 44 bottle wine refridge, and the dishwasher. Now the wife wants to add a free standing ice maker. I guess that means she is planning on throwing a lot of parties when the project is complete.

farah - having had the Bertazzoni and now the American, I can only say Go For the American! But, you can search Bertazzoni on this thread and see my postings to that regard. It was not for us. And, the American has much more room in the oven, the cooling fan doesn't run continuously, the temp knobs are easy to read and adjust, the burners light flawlessly and the oven door does not need to be open to light the oven. American also comes in colors if that is one of the draws to the Bert. Good Luck!

I just found this forum and was looking to see if other people have had bad experiences with their American Range stoves. I'm really frustrated with mine. It's a 36" 6-burner stove, we bought it last summer, and it's been problematic from the beginning. When it was first installed, it emitted a strong smell of gas at all times. I called American Range and they sent a service person who spent about five minutes with the stove, told me that he had "fixed" it, and told American Range that the problem was with my gas line. The smell of gas continued and American Range refused to do anything because they said it was a "he said/she said" situation between me and the technician. I won't go into all the details but we went back and forth for a month, I had to get my appliance store involved because American Range would not return my calls, and I couldn't cook for a month because we disconnected the stove from the gas line so my family wouldn't be poisoned.

Finally I called my gas company and they sent a guy who detected the gas coming from the stove itself and wrote up a report saying that the stove was "imminently hazardous." At this point, American Range finally sent a different technician, who found and repaired the gas leak in the stove. He told me so much gas was leaking that it could have made my whole family sick.

That solved the constant gas leak, but the stove still has a strong odor of gas for five minutes or more every time the oven is turned on. I've never experienced this with other gas stoves and it makes me nervous.

Just as annoying, the broiler will not stay lit. You have to press the oven door closed very tightly to get it started, and then after the broiler lights, it will usually turn off again on its own after a minute or two. You basically have to stand there holding the oven door pressed tightly closed for the whole time that the broiler is on, or the flame will go out. I know I should call American Range about this, but they treated my so badly with the first problem, that I'm putting off dealing with them again.

they say good things come to those who wait, i hope thats true in renovations too,lol. you usually get the best price when renovating in the winter, contractors are slower then. the way the housing market is today you may get lucky. as a former g.c. i have heard stories of contractors taking there time and not hitting the completion date because of simultanious projects. you may want to consider a clause that states if the contractor misses "x" amount of days in a week/month that he is fired and relinquishes any money owed to him at that point. usually payments are made in thirds 1st at the begining, 2nd after the walls/ceilings are enclosed and the third when final inspection and your satisfaction is completed. once they get the last payment it's tuff to get them back for any punch lists. also the contractor is responsible for any subcontractors work/damage, finishing on time and up to code. try and go over all lights,outlets,switches especially three way switches,switch placement,exterior spickets(water outlets) because to make changes mid stream can get rediculously expensive.if you are using a construction loan i believe you get draws when certain jobs are completed.the contractor may try and pressure you for money when his subcontractors are behind schedule. go over the banks requirements, with the contractor and have him sign a coy of it so there is no "misunderstanding". just my 2 cents.
as far as the grill goes, no clue but i have read that they could be messy it may depend on how you clean it. i have the griddle, best of luck.

I purchased the 30 inch American Range Residential model early last December. For the most part I have been very happy with it. I purchased it from Dvorson's in CA (I live in NYC). I was very happy with Dvorson's and would have no trouble buying anything from them again.

The range does everything it is suppossed to - my only complaint is that the oven seems to anywhere from 50-25 degrees off. I plan on contacting the company on Monday.

Overall I am very happy with the range and would definitely recommend it - it was a "great" value as well as an excellent piece of equipment.

Thanks for the advice. The plan with the contractor is to put in a clause that if they do not complete by X date they will lease the construction space for $XXX per sqf per day.

In my area some contractors have very little to no work right now and others are staying fairly busy. It seems to have the most to do with what part of town they primarily concentrate in. Those contractors that work in the suburbs and new construction are the ones with the least amount of work.

Those contractors that concentrate in-town seem to be pretty busy.

We are waiting on two more estimates. All of the contrators come highly recommended. Although we do have additional references we need to check out on the top two choices. The contractors range from being able to start construction tomorrow to being ~3 weeks out.

We chose not to do a construction loan due to the high expenses associated with this type of loan and the fact that we would have had to give up the phenomonal interest rate on our first mortgage.

You are absolutley correct about changes being expensive. This is one of the reason we selected the architect we did and spent the extra time working on placement, layout, etc. It required several iterations and took additional time but I think (hope) it will pay dividends in the end.

I think I am leaning the VAH hood based on recommendations.

Before you all bought your American Ranges, did you compare them with the Capital Precision? I can't make up my mind between the two. The Capital has higher BTU burners: 19,000 vs 17,000 BTU. Also doesn't have the "closed door" issue for the broiler, I think.

i bought my 48" a.r. sight unseen, in real life anyway. i liked the way their units were built. and the fact that it is a commercial range modified for residential use. it feels strong not chincy. i also like the fact that it didn't have a lot of bells and whistles that could break down in the long run. simple but still has a wow effect. also like the blue lights that let you know the burners are on and that the knobs don't have the clicky spots, you just turn it to the height of the flame you want. i haven't really looked into capital but american range is trying to make a name for them selves in this market and seem to go the extra mile.thats just what i've heard and perceived, i wouldn't change a thing if i had to do it all over again.

Alpacapolly - I compared the American with the Capital. I was able to see them side by side and decided to go with the American. Like Johnnytugs1, I liked the fact that American was making ranges for the commercial market already. I also feel that its a solid range and the American felt like a better range. I don't have my range yet, but from what everyone is saying, I'm not worried that I made the wrong decision. Good luck!

I went out to see the bluestar, with my intentions of getting it. The American Range was standing right next to it. I liked the look, feel and quality of the American Range. I continued on to look at the Bertazzoni. When I saw how small the oven was, I went back to the American Range. It is ordered and I expect to get it around June.

I am considering purchasing a 48# AR with 8 burners. Any issues with sealed burners? Example: sealed do not allow heat to the center of the pan/pot like open ones. We are in So.Cal and have found only one distributor...spoke with Geoff(Territory Rep), very helpful. Says that the repiar/installer guys would come from Los Angeles. Anyone had any issues? i answered your other post. i'm no chef, but it really is a great machine. i don't know about the heat at the center of the pots & pans but it cooks fine as far as i am concerned. i have been using it for almost 7 months.

Posted this message after the main one, found this thread along with the first one, extremely helpful. There are a lot of AR owners who are very happy. My concern about the burners is with an open flame, both the center and sides of a pan/pot receive heat, with a sealed burner, the flame comes out the sides and not the center. So I was wondering if anyone found that to be of issue when simmering or trying to bet a fast boil, etc. Will keep you posted, we just hired a designer and I'm finalizing my appliance choices as we speak! YIKES!

I have had no problem with a fast boil at all. For simmering, just need to match the burner ring with the pot size and everything has been fine. I had the semi-open on the Wolf and prefer the American for many reasons. It is a breeze to clean up - ss vs. black porcelain among other things. We are still loving our range!

Funny you should mention the Futuro hood. The wife was looking at it the other day and really likes the looks.

I am not as sold on it. I am leaning towards the vent-a-hood. I like the design and the fact that I can get the infared heat lamps as an option.

bugaboo - hi...there are quite a few things...let me see. The indicator lights that show for each burner and the oven. (The Wolf has 1 for the oven only) The fact that the knobs have no "stops" - you can adjust it up/down as much as you want. The SS top is very easy to wipe up. The grates are so easy to slide other pots across - the way it is all continuous. The oven fan only runs when you turn it on (as opposed to those that run on their own free will!) The oven has two lights. The oven racks have a lot of guide positions so you move the racks around a lot. The oven is a lot larger than many - all of our pans fit w/no problems both sideways and longways. The range comes with a riser (instead of having to purchase it sep) but we did pay extra to have the island riser instead of the standard one. The support from American has been outstanding with any questions/concerns we had before and after purchase. I know there is more but I'm drawing a blank. And it comes in colors! :)

And, of course, the fact that we have had no problems with it at all has been great!!

I bought a 30" in white from Dvorsons. Happy all around. Couple things I thought I'd share:

- my trim rings around the knobs were slightly binding. If you pull off the knobs you can adjust the ring position. BIG pain to pull the knobs though as mine are very tight - you need gorilla fingers.

- the broiler really cooks (so to speak) but being required to have the door closed to use it is annoying. When I want to use the broiler I put a metal magnet on the door frame to hold the door switch closed. Problem solved.

Well the VAH I was considering getting to go along with the American Range is not offered with the Infraed Warming Lights. That throws the field of hoods wide open again.

For those wondering we STILL have not broken ground on the house expansion - it is going much slower than I had expected. We have selected a company to do the work and are currently working with their designer and working on the contract.

I had origanlly hoped to finish around July 4th. Now I am hoping to be complete before Thanksgiving.

My 30" AR was installed this week and it's beautiful! I can't wait to cook on it. Unfortunately the forecast for the weekend in LA is hot hot hot so I will wait until next week to do the burn-off.

cuhead- thank you for the tip about the broiler! I was afraid the oven-door issue would be very irritating. Such a simple solution.

cuhead, congratulations! you can also place something against the ring and give it a tap and that would move it just enough to give the knob free movement. i just don't remember what i used. just curious, why would you broil with the door open?

^I dont always keep the door open, its just that I dont want the broiler to turn off when I open the door to move, flip or check the food. Just yesterday I broiled a ribeye and then crusted it with blue cheese under the broiler - good stuff. You definitely want to watch it as it nears the end to keep from over browning it. The broiler is extremely hot, so I'd bet the door switch is a requirement of the attys.

after you broiled the ribeye was it hard to clean-up. i have let mine go for a week before wifey realized i made a mess. and it cleaned easily. but i never tried broiling a steak and was wondering how it went.cooking & clean-up.

Doesnt make too much of a mess, just a bit of grease sizzles. I'm not a conscientious cleaner though, so I'm not the best judge. I line the bottom of the broiler pan with foil which helps cleanup on the pan. Also, thats the way I cooked it - not too brown on the cheese though.

Well after a long search I think we have narrowed it down to two hoods. Both of them are contemporary style 54" Venta-A-Hoods.

We ran into an issue trying to find something that would give us the look we want and flow enough CFM.

There were a couple of others we liked until they were priced. The plan was not to spend $7700+ for a hood - more than the range was.

i just started part 2 of the reno. ordered the cabinets for the range area i'm using a 60" broan island hood. modified as a wall mount with a new broan insert. thats plan "A" anyway. painting is done should have the samsung fd when i get home on the 28th.now it gets ineresting going to cover the hood with the backsplash tile.

We have not placed the order for the hood yet. I want to say the price of the hood is ~$2500 but can't remember if that includes the chimney cover.

We are still a ways of from the job being completed. We STILL have not broken ground yet.

The construction company we selected has their own way of doing things that they swear minimizes on site time, increases quality, and reduces distruption.

Right this minute I am not too thrilled with them but as construction has not started I am witholding final judgement.

We are in the process of completing the interior design - cabinets, bathroom, finishes, colors, etc. Why we are not starting construction till all these decisions are made makes no sense to me. Just tell me the f'ing deadline decisions need to be made by and it will be done.

This company harkens back to the old school mentality of "having inventory" vs. JIT (Just In Time).

But this is the company the wife wanted and we do like the designer.

We have selected Italian Cabinets for the kitchen and are working out the final details. I have some misgivings about the cabinets but they are good quality and we like the look. But if I was building the cabinets there are changes I would make. Unfortunatly we just have not seen a line made in the Good Old USA that gives us the look and all the features we want. Take away those to points and I there are things I can get in cabinets made here that the Italian ones wont have.

Well things took a turn for the worse with the design/construction company we selected.

I can only describe them as a bunch of amatures. There is a lot of things they really did not know and kept trying to change the plans the architect created. They wanted to do things the way they always have not the right way.

Not to mention they missed a number of items in the scope document and kept trying to revise their bid. We recieved 6 bids a majority of those being smaller companies and none of them missed the pieces this place did.

They were the most unprofessional group I have ever dealt with.

We are waiting on a partial refund for the design fee. They were not happy when we told them we were not interested in the $45k cabinets they selected for us which was significantly more than the budget we provided them.

So after wasting 2+ months with this company we are back to selecting a construction company for our project.

Once I recieve the refund I will share the name of this design firm so others can learn from our horrible expierence. For a design firm they did not even do that well.

If this is the biggest issue we encounter in our project we will be in good shape. I am just hoping we can get everything completed for Thanksgiving.

At least they had not started the real work before they realized they were not capable of completing.

What a bunch of amatures.

I have a queston for those of you with American ranges.
No electronics also seems to equal no clock and no timer. Is that correct? If so, do you miss not having a timer? What do you use in stead? I can be a little distracted in the kitchen and set my timer for almost everything. I know it seems trivial compared to performance issues but as much as I like this range it's kind of nagging at me.

Hi ardra, I'm totally dependent on a timer too, so I keep an external one next to the stove. I use it all the time and don't miss having a built-in one at all. I don't miss the clock either because there's one on both the coffee maker and microwave.

It is getting exciting around here. The electrician has just finished doing the final work. I now have electricty for my 24" American Range! (Unfortunately, plumber won't be doing his final work for a week or so.

I couldn't help turning a range knob. When I did, all 4 burners had their electronic spark iginition "lighting". Is this normal?

ardra no electronics, less to go wrong! i have the 48" and it is great. never used the timer on the old stove. i just never trusted it.not sure if you have seen it yet but it is a good looking range.everyone that walks in my kitchen see's it and there eyes light up. and there is nothing around it, just picked up the cabinets yesterday.and the refridge last week. i can't wait for it to be finished & then see what they say.best of luck.

amg listen, look at this as a blessing. and if you have to do it 10 more times, it's best to find out before the work starts. this will only make you stronger and wiser. shame on these guys not being able to get thru to at least the rough before the customer realizes they are a con.
now you will almost beable to smell them as they walk thru the door. just don't let your guard down.keep the faith no matter what don't settle for anything less then 100% satisfaction.

Thanks Johnny. The things with the first group of amatures that really got under my skin was that they tried to act like everything they did (as part of their job) was a favor to us, that they tried to blame us for the problems they ran into, and that they wasted a couple of months of our time. There was a right way and a wrong way for them to have handled the situation and they picked the wrong way. We are now dealing with their attorney for a partial refund of the design fees. Things could have been much worse. It is not like they were sitting on a $50k or a $100k of our money or anything. I don't think they realize how many jobs they have lost because of their behavior. We have already guarenteed they will not got 2 jobs (of course there was no guarntee they would have gotten the jobs in the first place but if we can save someone a headache...). So in this market they assured themselves of not being in the running for over $600k in jobs so far.

Anyway we selected a new company and they started work on Tuesday. They have started clearing the area for the new addition and pulling the permits. Tomorrow I should have a better idea of when they will begin excavation for the expanded basement and the foundation.

They have a custom cabinet builder we will interview shortly. We have one cabinet design that needs some tweaking on file with a local show room but have not finalized anything yet.

Still need to place the order for the Hood from Dvorsons. Can't wait to get the American Range. I saw that someone had posted about their concerns over purchasing the American Range site unseen. That is exactly what I did and I have no concerns or hesitation.

Ohhh. You all in the thread will apperciate this. The desginer from the first company tried to talk us out of the American Range and was pushing Wolf - the American Range was "just too powerful" (put out too many BTU's). Let me get this straight you want me to spend more money for a lesser product? That is a good idea, or not. I have a little news for you - I can turn down the heat level but you can only turn it up so high. I would much rather have more power than I need/can use than not have enough.

Johnny you are 100% correct about not setteling. The new company seems to be very good from that perspective - from all the feedback we recieved and the conversations we had. Of course only time will tell.

Hello again,

John - thank you for the reassurance. The blue lights are cool.

I have yet another concern (or, worry). The electrical outlet was placed in the wrong spot. It fell right behind the metal plate that protects the gas line connection. The electrician "moved" the outlet so that it was "recessed" further back into the wall so the plug will be out of the way and the range can be flushed against the wall. I just need more reassurance that this is an acceptable set-up.

ohhhhhhhhh man i forgot my password and couldn't get in, to post. it turns out i didn't forget it, it just wouldn't except it.

donnay, sorry i couldn't get back to you sooner. you could also lower the outlet so it is below the base of the range kinda even with the legs. you don't need a double outlet so you could use a single outlet like the ones that you see under at least 1 window in each room. that's what they did for a dedicated line for the a/c window units.

I can finally talk about the bunch of amateurs that we originally selected to work on our expansion project which includes the new kitchen the 48" American Range will go in.

The company we were dealing with is Home Forge aka Home Forge Remodeling in Atlanta, GA.

We had to deal with Home Forge's attorney to try and get a refund of some of the design fees we spent with them.

If you are considering a project in Atlanta stay away from this company.

They are a bunch of Amateurs. They just don't have a clue as to what they are doing. This company cost us several thousand dollars and 3 months of time on our project.

They tried to revise their bid a number of times while we were working with them. Out of all the bids we recieved they were the only ones that missed a number of items on our scope document.

They do not know the meaning of Porject Management or follow through. They have very poor communication skills. They do not know the meaning of Green building and want to build "old school" (and not in a good way). The more you talk to this company the more you realize they are a marketing firm and know little to nothing about construction.

I could go on about this company but it is taking this thread off topic.

Do yourself a favor if you are in Atlanta and don't waste your time talking to Home Forge.

Tomorrow we have to go before the county planning commission for variance on the existing structure. The house was built ~70 years ago and obviously has not moved. But now that we want to add an addition to the house we need a variance for the existing structure.

All of which is a long way to say that if things go the way they should tomorrow the project will begin to make positive progress.

The convection fan can be turned on without the oven burner being turned on giving you standing room temperature, increase the temp by turning on the oven light.

Out of curiosity how long did it take to get your range, in particular one with a grill? I ordered mine in April with an expected delivery date of July. I am ready for delivery, but am now told they are not available until the next week or two, or perhaps even three. A little frustrating :(

akarinz are you getting that info from the dealer, distributer or from AR? if it's from the first 2 call AR but your gonna have to have your order info from the dealer. what dist. are you using? try calling AR anyway.i ordered mine in June and received it in the beginning of august i think.but they had just started manufacturing the 48" @ that time.

donnay - our electrical had to be moved too. they can sure get creative with how they place the box. I know it is too late but we ended up moving the box over and then down so it would be closer to the floor where the range legs create an opening.

amg - progress!?! I hope....hang in there.

joel - I have not tried the dehydrate function but I read through it and it seemed it would work fine. Maybe someone else will have tried it.

akarinz - give American a call. I know it is frustrating but it will be worth the wait!

ggkell - having had the Wolf (defective/all gas) we love the American. I don't know if there are dealers in VA but contact the main number for American and see who the distributor for the area is. I know lots of folks have had good luck ordering from Dvorson's that didn't live in that region. Also, if you can get the name of the distributor and they are close enough they might have a model for you to look at there. If you have someone at an appliance store you want to work with see if they can get you info on the American.

We are still very pleased with our range! Matter of fact, we recently considered a possible relocation and I would have put in another American in a heartbeat!

I have been away from here for awhile.

We have made a little, very little progress.

We have decided to go with a local cabinet builder for custom kitchen cabinets. We have 90% of the design completed and just need to make some fairly minor tweaks.

We have also recieved the variance we were waiting on.

Beyond that we have made no progress. Due to the delay in being able to start we have hit a timing issue with the new contractor we selected for the project. I have my fingers and toes crossed that we can get started in 2 weeks.

Oh, we have decided to replace some of the windows in the house. The windows are ~70 year old, steel casement windows and on a good day may slow the wind down. A good number of the exisiting windows will go away with the expansion.

Just wanted to give a quick update on the cleaning ease of the range.

I previously reported a slight mishap with 1 frozen pizza and 1 preheated American Range. (Meaning, I dropped the frozen pizza upside down on the window after the oven was already hot!) Obviously, I had one big melted cheesy mess on the window of the range. I didn't even attempt to clean it until it cooled off. Then, I basically scraped all I could until I had the time to really clean it.

This am I used Vinegar first (got some but not all) then Easy Off (no fumes version) on the window and it cleaned everything right up. No hassle at all really. Just my clumsiness. We have not had a problem keeping the range itself clean.

We have had very good response from American and the distributor here (ATL) with any questions/issues we have had. I would think they would help however they can.

I would also encourage you to call American directly and ask them any questions you might have. We did that when we had very little information from the retailer and it really helped a lot.

Well, cancel that question, I guess--or should I say rather that I called my credit card co. and we also have the double-warranty protection clause on our card. So I'd have 2 years on this. With more mechanical items (as opposed to those with heavy electronic involvement that can wear out, fry, etc.), it seems the problems crop up earlier, as in things aren't aligned right/installed right etc., and once you work out those issues, you're good to go.

I should ask: have people noticed any problems cropping up after several months that weren't there at the beginning? If so, have you addressed them with the warranty? Thanks.

AR Gas leak
Luisa called Josh, Josh called AR, AR's Chris Thompson called Luisa. and... It's no longer a problem. They raised the regulator and the manifold is now welded. Any problems we are to call him directly at 818-897-0808.
Our AR arrives the 25th. Cabinets are in, floors being finished, counter tops Monday, tile work and Bosch dishwasher Tuesday, the neat colored switches from Lutron came today, and the 36" Liebherr is still on the boat (sigh)

The picture with the "patina" is a commercial range. Hard to tell but could be scorching.

I would think the residential version would not do that at all. We got ours in Dec 07 and have no discoloration anywhere at all. Our tile back splash also has no marks from the range. It is very easy to clean the top - the ss portion. We use Method SS cleaner and it just wipes right up. So after 9 months it still looks great!

We haven't had problems show up at all. If they did, I have no concerns that they would not be handled appropriately by American.

*long self-pitying sigh*...We're trying to figure out how to make an American part of our home but we are currently stuck on:

550 lbs?!!! That is one freakin' heavy stove!! We'd have to sister the joists under the freakin' house! Or is there something like 200 lbs of packing material included?

I really don't think we can do this, just because of the weight :(

Although when we research the consumer complaints against the various electronics-containing range manufacturers, they *all* center on the electronics breaking down and either jamming the door shut or starting the oven or broiler up unasked and almost burning down the house or exploding in the owners' faces. It's a crazy world in electronics-land.

What are we supposed to do?!

Sorry - Method Stainless Steel Cleaner - we got it at Target and I think I've also seen at Lowes (I think!)

flyleft - aren't you looking at a 30"? - the shipping wt listed online is 300 lbs. which I would assume includes crate, box, packing, etc. We have the 30" and didn't have to change anything to our floor/basement. I'm sure someone at American could tell you the actual wt. without all the shipping materials - maybe get all of the tech specs. If you aren't looking at 30" - oops! Hope it works out.

Hi plumorchard--yes, I was looking at the 30" at one particular place (acitydiscount--great sale, btw!), and I see it's listed mostly at 300-350 other places. I have an e-mail in to them to see why the shipping weight is 200 lbs heavier than any other lpace listed.

these may be dumb questions, but here goes:

I am trying to decide on a 30 inch range and have been researching them for some time. Seems like each time i find the "right one", I read something negative about it and the search begins anew. The American is the one range I keep coming back to.

1. If I order a range online ( I live in metro Detroit and closest distributor is somewhere in Ohio), how exactly does the range get into my house? Do the shippers bring it into the house? If not, how does one get it into the kitchen?
Is it difficult to install and level?

2. If the range needs to be serviced, who would do this?

3. Many of the ranges now offer a warming drawers . Do any of you miss this feature?

TIA, i have been reading these forums forever and have learned so much from everyone sharing their experiences. It is an amazing thing, and honestly, its truly heartwarming. I stay up later to read these forums than i do to watch the Olympics!

plum, thanks for the pic. I see the 30" between the range and the vent fan...guess we have to move our cabinet overhead. That's o.k. :) I heard back from the seller today and they're evidently including the crating materials, and they ship directly from the manufacturer...? The range itself they confirmed @350. Well, that was what they had to say.

massagerocks, I hear you--it's so frustrating! The American is one of the final two that hasn't disqualified itself yet. From what I understand about shipping, you get "liftgate" shipping to your driveway, then someone has to get it inside the house and installed. Unless you can arrange for "white glove" shipping which means delivery to the room of your choice with packing material removal. I'll let the other folks take the service question. I can say about the warming drawer that I don't anticipate missing it--it's a convenience, but I probably would use a second oven more than I would use a warming drawer. But quality is more important to me than features, so I want not to have to spend money 5 years from now when a "full-featured" range dies.

I can't think anymore...I'm beat after watching the Olympics and staying up researching!

massagerocks-when we had a previous range delivered it was removed from the truck to the garage by the delivery company. Since we knew it was coming that day and what time, I had the installer and a friend here to help get it inside. It wasn't too difficult and in our case the kitchen is right in from the garage. However, the driver did offer to help before he left.

A plumber can install (or some have done it themselves) and I think leveling the front legs can be a little tricky but not impossible. You just need an extra helper while you are adjusting the legs. The rear is on casters and that seemed a bit easier for them.

If you need service, there is a number in the manual to call. American will send someone to you.

I don't miss the warming drawer. The American oven does have a warm setting which we use at times. I would rather have the larger oven that the warming drawer that takes space away from that.

fly - another reason we moved our cabinet a bit is so hubby wouldn't hit his head on the vent hood!

I think our range was 350 w/the shipping materials. I had to do shipping estimates. I don't think it weighs 350 stand alone but I could be wrong.

Hey plum, I hear you on the hitting the head--DH is 6'4" and I think he'll appreciate it :) Just have to figure out what we'll do with that space instead.

We've pretty much decided to go with the American, since we can find it at a decent price only about 25% over what I wanted to spend as a maximum LOL...but that was before I realized we want NO electronics to break down. The other possibility was a DCS, but reading a thread on Apartment Therapy convinced me that we could be rolling the dice wrt service, vs. (what we see here of) American's sense of responsibility to customers after the sale. Looks like we'll go with Dvorson's, too--DH realized that if we'd been in the market for a stove when we visited SF two months ago, we drove *right* past them, since they're neighbors with Heath Ceramics in Sausalito, where we had a marvelous tour! Would have been fun to meet Josh in person--he sounds like a card :) So that's our decision, fwiw.

We done gone and done it...put a deposit down on a 30", to be shipped when we are ready.

Hope it's the right choice...seems like it. I'm way too much of a Libra. :) Did anyone get the wok ring?

Josh at Dvorson's couldn't have been more helpful or patient. Hope the rest of the process goes as smoothly.

And one further question: I think I remember that the specs say that the minimum distance to a range hood is 30", but when I look at the pics on the website, the hoods look like they start about the same distance up the cabinets as ours does, which is only 25.5-26". If we didn't have to uninstall the hood, take out the cabinet above it, cut the cabinet, and reinstall the hood, it would make our lives *much* easier...does anyone have a hood installed @26"? I'll probably call American on Monday just to clarify wrt those pictures, but do you see what I mean? The hoods start maybe 6-8" above the bottom of the top cabinets.

I don't think it makes any difference as long as there is no wood on your lower hood. Most hoods are installed at 27 to 32 inches, but some are closer and some are more. Closer is generally better anyway (but there are so many other variables).

Thanks for your reply. Our hood is all stainless, alex -- I remember we installed it at what Zephyr said was the optimal distance, in their specs. It *is* just stainless, no wooden hood...maybe we'll try keeping it there and not ripping the kitchen up again and see if we can make that work. It would be SO much easier.

Thanks, plum. I'm so excited--we haven't had a really well-functioning oven for about 3 years--it hasn't been dependable, and I've just ignored it and hoped I could repair it. I've learned now we can't and I'm throwing in the towel and getting a decent non-electronic range to teach DD how to cook. Yeah, that's it, -- it's for the children! :)

I do wish American had star burners. That would make my perfect oven. That size oven, stays-cool on the front more than the Bluestar, and star burners. I wonder if, if they ever change, our burners could be retrofitted with new ones? A girl can dream...but the lack of electronics and large oven that has such flexiblity wrt temperature, and nice hot broiler is enough for me to look forward to for now. :)

Re the wok: we found a site yesterday from which we might actually order a separate propane wok burner and keep it outside, of all things...so we may end up with a new wok cooker AND the American. A veritable *sea-change* in our culinary landscape. I'm so excited. Did I mention that? :)

The hood is a Prestige 1200 cfm insert. It has 4 baffles in a pyramid shape. Pull the hair off the top of your head. I am quite grateful for it right now - phew!

That is a *beautiful* kitchen. Truly gorgeous. Is that a walnut island counter? And the backsplash--so fascinating. Who made those tiles? And what are the shelves-stainless? Really *lovely* progression of color up the wall. Congratulations :)

Thanks flyleft. The island is walnut from John Boos purchased from Butcher Block Co. 8' by 30" ($890). The tile is Heath in Sausalito Ca. (all seconds). We made the shelves from 2 x 6's rubbed with the color paint of the tiles. I think they should be sealed now. They are suspended on 2 rods from the wall so you don't see the mounting hardware & fitted with 2 halogen pucks each.

Ha! I was going to guess Heath, believe it or not. All the subtle little differences in color...*so* very beautiful. I spent a wonderful hour or so in the seconds room just this past June, and came away with enough rectangles (unfortunately none of the cool shapes) to do a better gas-heating-stove backer. I did our house numbers and doorbell holder out of them too. I *love* Heath :)

That island is just stunning. Folks don't get that from Boos often enough. Have you started using it? I'm not sure I could actually bring myself to cut on it.

And brilliant about the shelves! How are the rods affixed? Are the halogen pucks wired or battery operated? I'm a big DIYer and I see you are too. Nice to 'meet' you :)

Haven't actually used it yet but it wont be long now! Previous kitchen had maple blocks for 30 years & we just used mineral oil. Now I can't decide between that & a product GW folk recommend from E-Bay which is a combo min. oil & bees wax.
What do you mean "Folks don't get that from Boos often enough"?? I don't understand.
The shelves: the steel rods are drilled perpendicular into the studs & stick out about 4 - 5 inches from the wall. The puck wiring comes out between the 2 bars. They are halogens & the transformer is under the sink. Then the tile went up.
The shelf is a 2 x 6 (or use 2 3/4" boards together with edge tape) The 2 rods & wire go into pre-drilled holes in the back of the board & the pucks go into a hole in the bottom so they are flush. The last one on the far right has
2 pucks in it.
We left a 1" space between the wall & the back of the shelf so they look suspended.
These pucks are beautiful bronze finish & can be suspended from a thinner board & allowed to show for a different look.
In that case you might rout out 2 grooves & just rest the shelf on them.
It was truly very simple, inexpensive & eliminated the need for brackets!

Thanks for the details on the shelves--brilliant work that ends up looking simple but takes an impressive amount of detail and forethought. So the steel rods are visible in that 1" space?

And what I meant was that while we see Boos maple pretty regularly, we don't see walnut all that often and it's so beautiful I wish it would appear more. We're using walnut ply over a freestanding piece in our master bedroom--really looking forward to that being done and up. I love a nice expanse of walnut. I have a feeling that with the walnut, the Heath etc. our aesthetics are pretty similar :)

Well, we did the burn-off this weekend. The dealer said 20 - 40 minutes. Maybe to bake a pizza but certainly not to burn off these smells! We did an hour in the oven & another hour for the broiler on Sat. It still smelled awful so we repeated it on Sunday. Better, but still pretty smelly. You would think 4 hours would do the trick.
Is this the norm for all of you American Rangers out there? Or do we have a problem here.

I do remember doing our burn in much longer than the book said. It does eventually go away. Maybe call the support line just to be sure. Let us know.

Spoke to Chris from American Range (he apparently follows the thread here as he commented on how nice the stove looked in my new kitchen!) & he was extremely helpful. A tech called this afternoon & will be here tomorrow to check on stove. Now that is customer service!

My husband and I are getting ready to purchase a 36" American Range. We have a friend who purchased from AJ Madison and she had a good experience, but I'd like to hear from others. Did you purchase from a local appliance store, an online outlet like AJ Madison, or can you purchase directly from American Range?

hi doris, i almost went thru aj madison, but they decided that the price they gave me was to low and then basically ignored my calls. see e-pinions search a.j. madison i live in jackson, n.j. and used dvorson's in california.all went well. josh is a stand-up guy.

Loving my 36" American Range. It does it all & very well! Boils the water before I can turn my back, simmers very low
& bakes beautifully. I especially am enjoying the convection feature for extra browning & exceptionally even cooking. The oven is huge. I can't believe how much I can fit in on just one shelf. The stainless top is easy to clean too. it really is a beautiful piece of equipment. Thank you all for turning me on to it.

Ditto for Dvorson's. They have been excellent in my dealings in the past. I bought a Wolf range from them a decade ago. As well as a few other items for school snacks bars....

I would have purchased my American from them but the bay area was too far to drive and pick it up. (They had the lowest price I could find.) BTW--Universal Appliance in LA is good to deal with as well, but doesn't compete price-wise with Dvorson's.

It looks like we'll be buying from Dvorson's, as well. I emailed Josh on Sunday night and got pricing and info today. I'm going to call him tomorrow and order. I can't wait to have a stove again (kitchen remodel has gone on for 1 YEAR NOW, with no stove!).
