need help with google
paulsmth2
I was keying something in on gardenweb and I must have pressed some key i should not have. Googe popped up using a version of google i have never seen.
How do i return to the previous version. Hopefully any changes that was made because of this would be reversed also.
Thanks

You are going to have to a little more specific than "version of google i have never seen."
What happens if you type www [dot] google [dot] com into your browsers address bar and hit enter?
i tried a system restore to two days before this happened. It did not replace google back to where it was. How do I uninstall google and where is the best place to download the current version.
I'm sorry but I'm still not understanding what you are asking. Google is a company that provides a wide range of products and services, most famously a search engine. Most of their products are "online" and work through a web browser so there's generally nothing to "uninstall."
If you are having problems with Google's search, it's possible that you somehow changed the default search engine in your browser. The method to change it will vary by browser but is usually somewhere in the settings menu.
Have you tried a different browser? If so, are you getting the same result?
Windows 10 store has Google search which gives easy access to their other sites and has settings to start at other than search.
google.com search on someday's looks a little bit different;
yes...; this s the screen I am getting now. I don't want it. I need to get my old or oriinal screen back.
I'm speechless.
Maybe this suits you better? https://www.google.com/advanced_search
no... too much data. My original screen gave me a simple input screen for a search. However I could click on the image button above and i would get a input screen that allowed me to upload an image to use in the search.
Google Image Search? https://images.google.com/imghp?hl=en&gws_rd=ssl
i updated with the latest version of firefox. I don't know if that was the reason but I just got my original google screen back. However when I click on the image button I do not get my original search screen which allowed me to upload an image to help in the search. Also it looks like this problem has changed a lot of my icons. Each icon is now a separate design. That doesn't work for me. I need one type of icon basically for folders and another type of design to look at indicidual files.
no... that is not the image search screen i used to have
I don't know then. When I click the camera in image search and then click "Upload an image", I get this:
I'm using Firefox but it's not so much the version of Firefox I'm using that determines how the screen looks. It's mostly just what (and how) Google decides to present it to me.
"I need one type of icon basically for folders and another type of design to look at individual files."
I'm not sure I understand. If I click the "Browse" button to search for an image to upload, it looks like this on my computer:
I'm running Linux though, yours would look different (but perform the same function). Is that where you're seeing icons of folders and files? In a "File Upload" dialog box I mean.
ok... i can live with that image search screen. How do i get it into my system
When you say "that image search screen", do you mean the file upload dialog? The second image I posted?
If so, and yours looks different than it used to, maybe you just accidentally changed it to a different "View" setting?
If that's what happened, try clicking the icon I have circled in red and watch the view change until it's the way it used to be.
That image is from Windows 10. I may have missed what version of Windows you're running but whatever version, it should probably be similar.
no... t he view doesn't change when i click on it
Then does it have the little "down-arrow" that you can click and select different views?
Sorry, I don't use Windows much.
now when i click on it i get a listing of about ten items or icons. none of them tells me what they are or what they do
Is the listing similar to this?
If it's anything like that, doesn't it allow you to select one at a time to see what they do?
If it's something altogether different than what I pictured above, can you take a screenshot (maybe using the snipping tool) and upload it so we have a clearer idea what you're seeing?
no... the sc reen i get is the same one you drew the circle on, i am familiar with the different views though and they are not what i need. perhaps we should go back to your previous screen... the one with the upload image part and work with that. if you give me a link to thqt screen and function i can bring it up And then bookmark it. i can then place it in my google bookmark folder with the other google programs (video, etc) and then whenever i need to use it i can simply click on the bookmark. i don't use this function all that much so even though the extra step would be a pain it is a workable solution.
I am rather speechless as well :-) I can call up Google - the search engine - on any computer using any browser and it looks the same. It even looks the same on my iPhone.
I guess I don't understand what you are seeing now compared to what you saw previously.
Heavens to Betsy, I'll solve the "mystery". Google has long had what they call "Google Doodles", special graphics commemorating particular holidays and other dates they find significant.
What you thought was a problem was simply one of those - to commemorate the birthday of Marshall McLuhan ("the medium is the message) and depicts various forms of communication means.
Some of you folks need to lighten up a bit. Nothing is or needs to be exactly how it is or was at every point in time. Go with the flow. Talk about overreacting! Had you ignored the cute graphic and typed a search term in your address bar or on the search line, Google would have behaved in the normal way. Had you moved your cursor over the graphic, it would have told you it was to commemorate McLuhan's birthday. Click on the link I placed below and you'll see that and many other doodles. Not all are presented to all users, what you see depends on where you are.
The McLuhan day has passed and the normal plain Google graphic has been restored. If the fancy one still appears for you, clear your browser cache and history and it should appear in the standard way. But it's been functioning normally all along. Be alert to one day special changes with other clever graphics, they happen frequently, often several times a month.
Google Doodles
Fudd
I am familar with google doodles. As a matter of fact i keep a bookmark for them on firefox. What you are not taking into consideration is that I got two or three screens in a row that were not really discernible screens. They made no sense and looked like half a screen. I eventually one way or another made my way back to the doodle screen and then after installing fhe latest version of firefox the original goodle screen showed up again but this time without the upload image capability.
I want to go back to my previous post and implement that approach. either of the two screens.... one screen showing the upload setup or the other screen showing the camera should work ok. i need a link to either of those screens or programs.
What was said earlier on was this:

End Copy and paste
I'm explaining this, it's the McLuhan graphic. If this isn't your question then I have no comment and why did you say this?
" ... the other screen showing the camera should work ok."
That's the link I gave in this post, which is: https://images.google.com/imghp?hl=en&gws_rd=ssl
In this post you said:
" ... My original screen gave me a simple input screen for a search. However I
could click on the image button above and i would get a input screen
that allowed me to upload an image to use in the search."
Is the image button you're referring to the one pointed to in this image?
If so, that's just the regular Google search page: https://www.google.com/
When you run into the exactly what you had before, could you please post an image just to satisfy my curiosity?
i think that the screen above was my original screen. when i click on the link you provided above i get the google screen...so far so ggod... however when i then click on the images button i get a new google screen that is different from before and it does not have the upload capability. i do not know how to take a screen shot...sorry i saved the page i get from the image button into a file. i just need to know how to send it to you.
if this works this is the address of the screen i get...
https://www.google.com/imghp?hl=en&tab=wi&ei=NCJ0WeiUCdPrmQG2qJ3oDA&ved=0EKouCBgoAQ
No, that just takes me to the image search screen.
" ... when i then click on the images button i get a new google screen that is
different from before and it --> DOES NOT HAVE THE UPLOAD CAPABILITY <-- . ... "
After clicking the camera icon, are you then clicking the "Upload an image" tab?
.
.
How to take a screenshot
i took a screen shot but the file is to large to submit...
How big can a screenshot be?
This image is 7.0 MB (sitting on my desktop):
Gardenweb readily accepted and resized it. I have no idea why a screenshot would be too big.
i took the screen shot i took into the paint program where i was able to resize it.
he image above is what i get from pressing the image button on your screen. this tells me that google has altered my systemj as you and i get different results from starting at the same point. i need to dowload a fresh copy of google programs. how do i do that.
There is no "fresh copy of google programs" to download.
That's Firefox browser you're using right? Is the white on black something you did on purpose? If not (or even if it is), perhaps resetting Firefox would help?
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/refresh-firefox-reset-add-ons-and-settings
the refresch worked. i got my original image search screen back. but, i got a bigger problem t hat popped up. I lost all my firefox info including bookmarks etc. I tried a restore but that did not help. i went back to my non sucessful screen so i could post on here. can i recover all the old info somehow. i just got a notice from firefox that they have an update ready to go. i wonder if i allow them to go ahead if they will locate all the old datal
Glad you got the image search screen looking normal again.
I don't know why a refresh would lose your bookmarks. Addons and themes, maybe, bookmarks, no.
Maybe this helps? https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1077743
Did you click Control-B to see if they're still there but just not being displayed? (I'm looking at the image you posted)
If it doesn't, other than just rebuild bookmarks, re-add addons, etc., I don't know.
Personally, I would trust Firefox to do it's update. I don't think that will locate old data though.
i know that firefox makes a backup of the bookmark files. you can then import it to the bookmak menu. I will take another look at this but it may be beyond my abilit to do this. I also lost my menu bar (file, edit, view etc) across the top of the page.
Are you signed in to FF?
If you restore the missing menu bar and click "Bookmarks", maybe you'll find the bookmarks are still there?
From this page: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/customize-firefox-controls-buttons-and-toolbars.
Don't asj ne how I did this but I restored my old bookmark filesl The best i can recall at this point is that i used this key to find the fileslll
http://www.gardenweb.com/discussions/4761901/need-help-with-google
that was the wrong addressl... here is the right one
*%APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\*\
key the above in your search window.
irefox stores the bookmark back ups in your profile folder when i opened the folder i was able to click on the bookmark part and then choose from about eight different bacjyups the one i wanted to use.I copied that file out to my documentsw folder on the computer. I went back to the internet and found a restore button ut ket ne select the file to use for the restore. once you know where the bells and right buttons are it is a pretty simple processl
i still have one more thing to work out. I need to get my men bar at the top of the firefox screen restored. this is the one that gives me file, edit,,view buttos etc.hopefully that is not a hugh tough problem.
Also may be a folder on the desktop called:
Old Firefox Data folder
" ... I restored my old bookmark files ... "
Bingo! :-))
.
" ... one more thing to work out. I need to get my menu bar at the top of the firefox screen restored. ... "
Copied from above:
.
Another method:
i got t he menu bar back again.
i posted the wrong address in one of my previous posts about finding your profile. this is the correct...
*%APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\*
Key this address in your search screen. this will list your profilel open it and display the contents. my bookmark folder was at the top. click on that and it will display all the saved boodmark files available for selection to use for backup. i copied this selection to the documents section on my computer. i thn went back to firefox and found an import or restore button. select the file you chose and it will be restored.
pardon my typing but this print is too small for me to read... i need to try to enlarge it a bit.
%APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\
Yeah, that's a very good way.
Another is go to "Help" --> "Troubleshooting Information" and click "Open Directory"
Something like this:
BTW, if you go into "Customize", you should be able to drag "Zoom Controls" to you toolbar if it's not already there.
That or you can press and hold "Ctrl" and use scroll on your mouse to enlarge so it's easier to see.
Another way:
Ctrl + will enlarge
Ctrl - makes smaller
Ctrl 0 makes it normal size
.
Anyway thanks for the information. Sounds like you're squared away?
.
BTW2, nothings to say you can't right-click that Firefox profile, zip it up, and tuck it away someplace just in case things go wrong again someday. I do. :-)
that control b function works great when you are on the internet but does not seem to work when you return to using computer.
i suppose i should take a look at backing up my whole system. It has been so long since i have done that that i am not even sure where to start. all of my data files that i create and use i accumulate under one folder name. every now and then i simply copy the folder file to a flash drive and use as backup.
Yeah, control b is a Firefox thing so Firefox has to be running and be the active window.
You remind me, I should probably backup my system too. My last system drive backup was in March.
My data stays backed up though.
Thanks everybody for all the help...it is much appreciated
