How to fix raised parquetry?

We have just purchased this handmade table, timber unknown (oak?) with a few flaws to fix (but worth it we think). Any tips on how to fix this raised section on the table-top? We have cleaned out the edges with a needle and not sure if a heavy press and glue is the best option?
