The hallway, treads and baseboards are pine whereas the handrail, spindles and newel post are walnut. And...the new flooring around the stairway is red oak which will be stained a medium tone. Won't the pine stain so much differently than the already-darker walnut? These spindles are not stripped and they of course look a lot lighter without the very old varnish.
