How to transition from stained staircase to painted molding??

I was hoping someone would have a suggestion on how we can transition from our staircase (which will be stained oak) to the casing that comes down on the side of the cased opening. In the picture you can see the angled left side of the staircase with molding underneath. The area in question is the right side of the staircase which you would be looking at if you had your back to the fireplace. You can see the cased opening which is cased in pine casing and backband and will be painted. It is where those two meet is the problem. They meet at an odd angle. Should we just run the white painted casing along that angled side of the oak instead of trying to joint the oak stained molding with the painted casing? Or should the place where they meet have a block at the intersection? If so, should it be painted or stained??? Thanks for your help!

Just paint the pine and stain the oak, It will look fine. No one will ever notice it.

Here is a picture from the correct side. As you can see, the oak rail (will be stained) along the bottom of the oak stairs meets the pine (will be painted) casing that runs vertically. Once we figure out what we will do, DH will replace the incomplete piece of casing. Thanks for any suggestions!!

Here are the (not so great) options we have come up with:
1. Run the painted casing down to the bottom of the oak, matching its angle, and just sand the bottom cut edge so its a little rounded off.
2. Put a block where the two meet (but we tried this and it looked stupid)

3. Instead of stained oak along the angled stair portion, continue painted casing on angled part (I didn't like to idea of this because then it would be white casing on a stained stair jamb (or whatever its called :)

Maybe there is "rule" for this sort of thing that we novices don't know about!

Run the casing and backband all the way to the floor, and as was said before, paint the pine, stain the oak. It will look best. If not that, at least extend the casing etc. down another 2 inches, and trim the abrupt ending with a miniaturised window stool/apron detail, some inverted base cap w/returns, or other suitable terminus. A halved drop finial, perhaps?

My sister has the exact same entry floor plan and she has the casing running to the floor painted and then the staircase stained just like the pp suggested. It looks great.
