Staining advice for fireplace mantel

I'm creating my own fireplace mantel and need some advice. I plan on purchasing some carved base legs and placing a pre-fabricated shelf on top of them to complete the mantel. The carved legs I want only come in linden wood. I want the mantel to be stained. So,

1. For the shelf, I can't seem to find any crafted from linden wood. What type of wood should I look for that will have similar characteristics to the linden wood to make the mantel look like one unit?

2. I have read that linden wood is not the best for staining. What do I need to do to get the best results?

Thank you!

Trevor
