Without knowing the type of wood it is very hard to determine what finish will give the look you are after.

Open pore woods (mahogany, walnut, ash and oak) and closed pore woods (maple, birch, cherry) take finish techniques very differently.

Pigment stain lodges in the open pores and emphasizes them, while aniline dye creates a more uniform color and de-emphasizes the pores.

Paste filler can be used in matching or non-matching color on open pored wood to change the appearance.

Do you want them darker?

A medium brownish gel stain would enhance the grain, followed by a second or third wiping of stain that you leave in the edges of the carvings and wipe off of the smooth areas to give the patina look.

General Finishes gel stains are really easy to use - wipe on, wipe off and stop wiping when you like the color, or wipe on another thin coat to darken a bit. Then wipe on a coat of satin gel urethane and you are done.

Apply your choice of stain with an appropriate brush as listed in the directions on the stain can. Apply the stain evenly and rub it in with a rag if necessary. Allow the stain to dry for about 24 hours. Repeat to add a second coat of stain if desired.
