what exterior stain - sealer?

Hello, I'm confused about exterior stains, can what's called deck stain be used on any exterior wood? I have need to seal/stain some fence posts & panels, a cellar door, and some other things like an old oak lawn chair. It would be nice if I could just get one product.

And also When cutting fence posts I was told I should soak the ends in some sealer - well, what is that - could above mentioned product work for that too?

Ideally, I would like a gray-green semi-transparent color - any recommendations re: brands ? Something good and durable. THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!

RE: what exterior stain - sealer?

We recently used a product called Ready Seal on some of the unfinished cedar siding on our 50 year old house. We were very pleased with the ease of application and the result.

Here is a link that might be useful: Ready Seal Stain and Sealer
