How to cut a hardwood ball in half

stevega

I am making some Christmas projects and I need to cut a 1" diameter hardwood ball in half to glue on "eyes" for a band saw box. Any suggestions for doing this safely? I am worried that if I clamp the ball and cut it, it will jamb the blade before it parts. The only way I can think of is to clamp the ball in a padded jaw vise and use a coping saw to cut around the perimeter. Any better suggestions for more accuracy?

Also, how do I mark the equator/cutline?

Thanks
