to shorten wood bedrails

| I want to shorten the lenght of my wood bedrails by 3 1/2 inches.
The hooks that join the bedrails to the footboard are some how inserted into the end of the rails.
Is it possible to remove and reinsert them after cutting off the desired amount? How? Would you think that they go further into the wood than 3 inches?
Is there any other method to accomplish this?
The rails are 1x5". |

| You can do this, but it's not easy. These are the most common factory-supplied type. It is difficult to get the kerf cut without special equipment. You can, however, change the style on one end to a different style more appropriate to this upgrade |
