Wood Exterior Doors

| I have double front doors that have warped. So, I've been thinking of replacing them. Lowe's has 6-panel exterior slab doors (hemlock) for about $150 each, and I know a good guy to install them.
So, my questions:
1. Anything wrong with hemlock for exterior doors?
2. How should I finish the doors to keep them from warping? Stain? Paint (exterior latex)? Polyurethane?
3. Any problem with painting/staining/whatever prior to installation (in order to save having to paint around hardware, etc.)?
4. Anything else I should be thinking about?
I appreciate any thoughts! Thanks |

| I don't know where you live, but always expect some kind of a problem with wood exterior doors and warpage. Considering that the existing doors warped, I would expect the new ones to warp, also. Biggest problems are sun shining directly on the door, rain hitting the door, and a big difference in moisture between interior and exterior. We'e had real good luck with fiberglass and steel, but even they can warp some, as they have wood interiors. |

| In what sort of way have your existing doors warped? |
