Wood Exterior Doors

Posted by Sivs2 (My Page) on

I have double front doors that have warped. So, I've been thinking of replacing them. Lowe's has 6-panel exterior slab doors (hemlock) for about $150 each, and I know a good guy to install them.

So, my questions:

1. Anything wrong with hemlock for exterior doors?

2. How should I finish the doors to keep them from warping? Stain? Paint (exterior latex)? Polyurethane?

3. Any problem with painting/staining/whatever prior to installation (in order to save having to paint around hardware, etc.)?

4. Anything else I should be thinking about?

I appreciate any thoughts! Thanks

I don't know where you live, but always expect some kind of a problem with wood exterior doors and warpage. Considering that the existing doors warped, I would expect the new ones to warp, also. Biggest problems are sun shining directly on the door, rain hitting the door, and a big difference in moisture between interior and exterior.

We'e had real good luck with fiberglass and steel, but even they can warp some, as they have wood interiors.

In what sort of way have your existing doors warped?
