Matte, that is!

A semi-gloss finish correctly applied should have the appearance of 'no finish.'

A gloss finish has advantages in application and use, and most can be rubbed to semi-gloss with little effort.

Fine Paints of Europe makes a matte finish polyurethane. We used it on some kitchen drawers made of maple and other woods. It does give a very slight yellow tone to the wood compared to the unfinished (which, as new maple, is very white), but not so much that you would notice unless you open the drawer and compare the unfinished to the finished wood.

I love love love the fact that it is matte, very flat indeed.

Problem with the product is smell. During application, it was so bad that my husband couldn't do it indoors at all; couldn't even have them drying indoors, and afterward it took a LONG time for the smell to dissipate from the inside of the drawers (the outside didn't smell for long at all).

There are apparently issues with polyurethanes (chipping, refinish-ability?) that might make you prefer a different product, but as polyurethanes go, I like this.

karinl, the smell of such a finish means the product you used was an oil based Polyurethane. The smell & drying times are the big drawbacks of any oil based product. I won't use them for this reason. If you can handle the drawbacks, it's a very durable finish, however it will yellow over time.
