Options for staining/sealing older exterior fir door?

We're in the middle of a kitchen remodel that has an exterior solid fir door leading to a three-season room. The door was installed by the previous owners 7-9 years ago and is unfinished. Our contractor has told us that there's no reasonable way to stain the door given its exposure to sunlight, hands, etc., as the door would likely not accept the stain evenly. The door also has some minor scratches from the previous owner's dog which will be difficult to sand out without losing detail in the door's panels.

The contractor is suggesting that we either paint the door (which seems weird to me given all of the dark trim in the space, including the newly stained door frame that surrounds the door) or replace it. At $1,300 replacing seems both expensive and wasteful (the door doesn't look *that* bad).

I would love any thoughts on what we've been told. Is there really no way to seal/stain the door?
