Built in fireplace shelves design

We are in the middle of a great room addition to our house. As you enter the great room from the rest of our house, there is a large expanse of windows on the opposite wall which leads outside and a stone fireplace on the perpendicular right wall. We want built in cabinetry/shelving on both sides of the fireplace but realize their is only around 6-8" of space on the window end of one of the built ins. A tapered built in unit, ?24" closed cabinet depth at the bottom and 12-14" shelves above, has been suggested (on both sides of the fireplace for symmetry). We have around 60" on either side of the fireplace. Will this look ok or other suggestions?

If you want to share photos you can post them here. You need a free photohosting account like Photobucket, and copy the HTML tag of the photo into the body of your message here. It will show up when you hit "preview."

On the basis of the description you've given, I think I might consider making your built-ins narrower than the 60" space you have, leaving a gap of plain wall. Perhaps this might be handy for pulling curtains into, or for artwork, storing something upright, or a set of big floor vases?

It might help to see a photo.
