Burlwood table base - bad finish results

I'm in the process of making a burlwood coffee table. I finished the base of the table by applying a coat of water based verethene. The instructions said that the milky look would dry clear, however, it did not. Instead of enhancing the look of the burlwood, it gave it a dull whitish sheen. I don't like it and I'm hoping that there is a way I can either remove the finish with a wire brush or liquid sandpaper and apply a different kind of finish to enhance the look of the wood. Any help and suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thankyou.
