How to weatherproof old oak?

Debbie Downer

Have a rustic old oak chaise lounge that's been outside for many years and holding up surprisingly well. Any suggestions on how to preserve the wood. or at least slow the eventual decay. Don't think I want to use the usual exterior wood preservatives or deck stains - on a chaise lounge you're lying on the thing with your nose right up against it - and the outgassing of some of those chemicals arent the best thing to be breathing.

Also I like the weathered gray look of it - can I leave this on or should it be removed. If it has to be removed to get a finish to work on it, then I'd jprobably have to get some kind of gray or weathering stain to make it look weathered again. thanks!
