Minwax Helmsman OK on wood counter by sink?

My husband built a sink base for a farm sink out of fir for our back porch. Our local hardware store only sells indoor/outdoor Helmsman Spar Urethane. Is this the best product for wood around a sink?

Here is a link that might be useful: Farm House Sink Stand for back porch

Actually paint is better. If you want the wood to show, simply use a #4(or #5 with Olympic) deep tint base without any tinting. Those actually dry clear.

Any marine( or other) spar varnish will work, but will need to be periodically refinished(depending on weather).

I should have said 'laundry room' instead of 'back porch'. It's inside. At my grandparents the 'back porch' was a little room where we put our boots on before we went outside.

The on off handles will sit on a flat piece and I'm concerned water will pool up.

Will Minwax polyurethane work?
