Sugar Cherry?

I've been in furniture making for over 40 years and know my domestic wood fairly well. Recently someone gave me some wood to make them a birdhouse, that they claimed was cherry. To me it looks like beech and I said so. My friend went to the mill that cut it and was told that it was "sugar cherry". Never heard of this, have you?
