stain or paint wood trellis

Does it matter if you paint or stain redwood? I'm planning to replace this trellis with privacy trellis and add tongue and groove, all in redwood... I want the color to match the block wall underneath... Or should I leave the trellis part with a natural stain and only paint/stain the tongue and groove? Does it matter?

Sorry photo not upright...:

RE: stain or paint wood trellis

Since you have redwood, which is expensive. I would stain it, with a transparent stain.
