My favorite hand me down really old, really nice SS cook pot - its Plastic handle gave up on me from heat/cold/soap/old age.

Give me some suggestions to make a lasting handle without hit and miss experimenting.

Pot has an attached one inch deep ss-tube female socket, imagine a 3/4 inch flat topped emt with a single screw in the bottom to stick a handle inside of.

I know I can scrape a hardwood dowel to fit the hole, but its gonna see heat and lots of soap/water ..... open to suggestions/ideas. Thanks.
