HELP Please! Base board transition is at different Heights

Hi,

I am using 5 1/4" baseboard in a remodel and would like to use it in adjourning rooms.

The transition is from our kitchen to the family room with an open floor plan.

My problem is the hardwood floor in the family room is 1" below the tile floor in the kitchen. I only have the 4 1/2" stud wall to make the transition in. Any suggestions on how to make the miter cuts necessary for a nice looking transition?

A few ways to handle the problem. One is to make a return on each baseboard level and let the space between them run finished to the floor without baseboard.

The other is to rip the 5 1/4 to 4 1/4 for the kitchen area. Then you can make a mitre at each edge of the 4 1/2" stud wall

But, yes, we really need to see a pic.
