What kind of wood is this ?

And is there anything I can do to repair a scratch in the veneer ? It is on the footboard and not too wide. Also is it possible to whitewash this ? Any idea what that would look like ?

I do not see the defect in the pics, but it can likely be filled with either shellac sticks or a small veneer patch.
