Refinishing this table

A friend of mines is moving and offered to give me her table but I would like to refinish it when I get it. The best picture I have of the table is the one I posted..my question is how do I go about refinishing a table like this? I would like to make it darker.

Jeff Jewitt (the other good finishing author) just published a book on Refinishing Furniture. I have read it, but not looked at the included DVD yet. $25.
