Lighten without refinishing- is this possible?

I have just purchased some 60's nutmeg colored maple furniture. I would like to soften the orange hue, but I don't want to do an all out refinish. What do you think about using liming wax? I would lightly sand and then apply the wax. The maple grain isn't as open as other woods so it wouldn't take on that heavy lime wash look like oak does. If it just softened the look, maybe being a little whiter in the crevices I think I'd be happy. Anyone ever see maple with the lime wax?

Here is the buffet/hutch. I have chairs and a table too.
