Newbie question - workbench width?

I am new to this forum, and hoping for some advice from seasoned woodworkers. I have a couple of large pieces of butcher block I would like to use as a workbench top. It is 24" wide, but I have enough to double it, so my question is: would a 24" deep workbench be too narrow? Would 48" be better, or is 48" too deep? This is going in our basement, and will be used by the whole family for general carpentry projects (building birdhouses, small furniture repairs, etc.) I'd really appreciate any advice.

Thanks!
