Staining different varieties of any wood---and especially pine----is almost impossible to do and get all the colors close.

To top that off is the fact all varieties of pine tend to blotch when stained(or dyed), necessitating a preconditioner.

Some preconditioners add color, which complicates the already complicated process.

The only way to find an answer is to buy several different stains(I'd recommend deck stains, since wood stains/dyes will cost many hundreds of dollars to use) and experiment.

Buy some similar wood and preconditioner and spend several days seeing if any fit the color scheme you want.

You also need to know that oil based finishes(varnish or polyurethane) add an amber tint when used. And water based adds no color, which can leave a stain/dye looking flat.

After sanding down an old dark mahogany finish, I applied a red chestnut stain (Minwax) to an old bedframe, ending up with a deep cherry finish.
