Best wood for walnut stained cabinets and doors

Hi:

We are finishing our basement.
We want walnut stain for our doors and cabinets.
If walnut wood is not an option which wood should we consider. We don't want veneers.

The wood has to be easily available in MN.

Alder stains nicely.
