Antique Bed redo to platform

I have 2 beatuiful old pineapple beds that are in great shape. However, they are not standard sized. The current setup uses 4 angle irons to hold the box spring in the frame. Typical setup. However, the box spring is not standard sized and has never been replaced, but it really needs to be.

What I would like to do instead of getting a custom made box sping is to replace the boxspring with slats. I would like to also make the slats adjustable. I was thinking about using a router to put a notch in each rail that could take a wood strip and support the slats. I could run 2 or 3 down the rail. I am considering getting the slats from Ikea. This seems a little agressive, however.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can convert the bed to a platform type bed?

I do not want to use plywood for the platform as that is too difficult to move
