What kind of bench did you have in mind? Most of the woodworking magazines have had plans for benches over the years -- Fine Woodworking, WOOD, Shop Notes, etc.

Using a solid core door slab for the top is one way to eliminate having to do some kind of glue-up. Top it with a layer of masonite (screwed down) and you have a durable surface that can be replaced as needed.

It also depends on what you want to spend and what you are going to do with it. If you are going to be just stirring paint and cleaning the lawn mower, it will have different requirements than if you are going to be doing fine woodwork with mostly hand tools, or anything in between.
