gel stain on front door

My front door is solid oak. It is looking pretty weathered and I was wondering whether gel stain could be used on this kind of exterior surface. I live in Chicago, so there are some pretty dramatic changes in temperature (not sure if that matters). The door is simply too big to take down and I thought I could use the gel stain on it while it is in place.

Gel stain is more paint than stain. Being a compromise between paint and stain would make it weather faster and look worse.

You need a finish that handles the conditions.

There are several, but they need periodic recoating. Ask a painter/real paint store(NOT a home improvement store!) what clear finish they recommend for your area.
