| I grew up in a house with chestnut woodwork....and I believe that's what you have. Mineral spirits and paint thinner are the same thing....neither will remove varnish, paint nor shellac....just wax and grease. it won't even remove a drop of milk or any sugar-ey dirt. I bel;ieve that historically, shellac was what was used in that period....if you don't want shine....hit it with 10 ought steel wool....or 6 ought... Don't wax it....with an open grain like chestnut it will build up in the grain and be awful! I would use a wiping stain.....and mix and test and mix and test.....and when you get it right remember what you did! It can be done! I have done it. Good luck! Linda C |
