Butcher Block - Waterlox or Good Stuff for Wood - Nut Allergy

Posted by diginthedirt17 (My Page) on

Good Morning,

We were planning on installing a butcher block top on our kitchen island, and finishing it with Waterlox.

DD has peanut and nut allergy though...is Waterlox safe for her to come in contact with b/c of the tung oil?

Is it safe once cured? Are there any comparable alternatives? It looks like Good Stuff for Wood is a contender, but not sure what that is made of either...

We will not be cutting on the counter, but using it daily for food prep and such. Thanks for any advice you have! :)

This is probably a question for Waterlox.

Just be aware (marketing hyperbole aside) that being MADE FROM tung oil is not the same as BEING tung oil. Tung oil is one of the components of the varnish. It is chemically combined with phenolic resin by cooking it. It is no longer tung oil.

Chlorine is a deadly gas. Sodium is a highly reactive metal. Chemically combined, it becomes salt.

Good advice. I called Waterlox this morning and spoke with the technical director for quite some time.

As expected he couldn't guarantee 100% safety for a nut allergy, due to that fact that nut oil is in the product, although chemically altered...

I'll talk to my dh and decide what to do. Thanks!

Talk with your physician also.

Proteins are the normal allergen not oils.
