Gasoline to Refinish Table PROBLEM!
| | |
Posted by my3babypeaches (My Page) on Wed, Jan 27, 10 at 16:14
| I hired this guy to refinish my kitchen table and he used automobil gas to strip the varnish. I just about freaked. 7 days later, I still smell it on the tabletop. He did not poly it yet.
He said he didn't let it soak in and was right behind it with a sander.
Any recommendations on how to get the smell out and do you think poly will cover the smell?
I'm worried about my family's health and don't want to bring it in the house. |

| Might try using alcohol on a rag to remove the gas. I've used gas to clean a lot of things in my life, but stripping varnish on furniture was never one. |

| My main concern is do remove the gas because otherwise I don't want to bring it in the house. What are your thoughts? I'm not sure if I should begin shipping for a new table. |

| Naptha or oderless paint thinner. Wipe it down. It may take a couple applications and some tincture of time. |

| I looked this up online, and they used to use gasoline in the 1920's to clean the surface after the varnish was removed. that is scary, you might try sealing the table with a thin coat of shellac. this stuff may get rid of the smell http://nokout.com/store/product.php?productid=16174&cat=258&page=1 |
