Gel Stain or Polyshades?

| Looking for a way to update my cheap, orange oak cabinets. No sense stripping or painting them as they will be replaced in a few years.
I tried Minwax gel stain and that was a disappointing mess. I just could not get an even coat no matter what I did. I called Minwax and they recommended Polyshades.
I also heard that General Finishes makes a good gel stain for this purpose. But I have to drive 30 miles to get it.
I'm not looking for prefection just something to darken the cabinets to a deep red/brown. My husband just put in a new laminate floor and it looks lovely but it makes those cabinets look even worse. Any help or tips will be appericated. Thanks |

| Of course Minwax is going to recommend their own product. People I know that have tried Polyshades have been very unhappy with the results, myself included. It is very difficult to get it to go on evenly and without streaking. One expert calls it, "The worst thing to happen to a can." If you decide to ignore this advice, please take a piece of finished scrap and try it out on there before it touches your cabinets. |

| The pigment in the polyshades settle in the can even as you are trying to use the stuff. You cannot be very vigorous in stirring and mixing or you will create bubbles in the can and they will mess up the finish. Avoid the stuff. |

| you will need to clean and lightly sand the surface before you apply any type of finish. It may take a couple coats to get the color you want. Found this link that might be of help. http://www.ehow.com/how_4855397_stain-kitchen-cabinets-darker.html |
