oil over water finish question

I'm an idiot. I finished a section of oak flooring with water-based poly and it doesn't match the amber coloring on the rest of my oak floor finished with oil-based poly (no stains were used).

If I understand correctly, I can put oil-based over my water-based once it fully cures. If I do, will the oil-based give it that amber coloration even over a layer of water-based poly, or do I need to sand down to the wood so the oil-based poly can come in contact with the wood?

Thanks for your help! (asking here since this really applies to wood more than flooring I think)
