New Project--Built-in Shelving for Closet

Hi all. I'm considering putting up shelves along one part of my closet. It will have to be 14 to 18 inches deep, and the wall is 9 feet long with about 8 feet of vertical to work with. Basically it'll be an "L" shape that im making my built-ins.

i'd like to make a cabinet or two (3-5drawer) right in the middle, but it's not super critical.

Anyway i intend tyo use some good wood, but i really need to find some cheap solid wood--no mdf or anything fake. I was hoping to hear what I should look for. i was thinking red cedar, but idont know how expensive that stuff is.

how about walnut, maple, oak, etc etc? im willing to stain them a dark color. I'd love some burled style if I could find it. i'm thinking i need 14-18 inch deep shelves, with max length the entire run of the wall at 9 feet.

Let me know!!
