If the wire is connected to the switch, you may only need to connect the wire to the fan (does the power in the wire go on and off with the fan?). If not you'll likely need to install a new switch or figure out how to repurpose the existing one. There's not enough information here to explain that fully (nor room on a forum to teach you how).

Note that if the wire won't reach you either need to replace it back to the last connection or install an accessible box to make the connection to the new wire (being up in your accessible attic is fine).

yes, the switch turns fan on and off. however, I think the power goes to the fixture first then to switch. I think repurposing the wires is what im looking to do . thanks
