subpanel for range and dryer

Hi Everybody,

I need to install a subpanel 60 feet away from my main panel.

The subpanel will be for two new circuits, one for a basic electric range with coils and another for an electric dryer.

I was thinking of using THHN #4 AWG for the two hot and neutral and #6 for the ground. They have the #4 in black, red and white at lowes so I was going to get 70ft of each and 70ft of #6 coated green.

The install is in a bone dry basement with 9 1/2 feet ceilings. Do you have to run the THHN in conduit or can you nail it to the joists along the run?

Also do I have to use #4 or can I use #6 for the hots.

You can't run single conductors out of a raceway, so yes you need conduit. Only a cable assembly can be run out of a raceway.

Can't answer your second question without knowing how many amps you are planning to feed the sub panel with.

#4 copper THHN should give you plenty of ampacity (95 A) for this. #8 copper would be sufficient for the ground on a 95A feeder even.

Why not run 4-3 NM cable? No conduit would be required.

Yep, even the home centers have it (though you may need to special order it).
