help with unidentified wiring

I have an inset above my fireplace with a small lite in it. It has never really been used for the purpose it was intended ( I think ) and I thought I could take the light off and by using the extra wire in the wall, move it down and turn it into a duplex, when eliminating the niche, to be used for the TV or lighted wreath at Christmas. BUT the wires do not have the the black white and ground I expected to find in a box. There is no box and the black wire is spit into two twisted multi copper threads the two connected to the two wires on the little light.
What can I do with this? At this point I'm ready to throw out the outlet idea completely and just close the niche. I have it framed out to fill in with drywall, but know I should not leave a live wire in the wall.
