 o
power service to my shed

Posted by tray63 (My Page) on

I would like to run power to my shed from my house, about 130 feet. I am thinking maybe a 100 to 150 amp service tied in to a breaker box in the shed itself. I am told that a #1 sized 3 wire line will be ok to use to supply power from the house to the shed. Is this correct??

Thanks for any help with this!

No, it is incorrect. IF you are using #1 COPPER you have the right size (depending on what it is it could be good for 100-150A). However, if you have metallic paths otherwise (cable tv, piping, phone) you will need the ground. In addition even without metallic paths if your jurisdiction uses the 2008 NEC you need the ground.

You will have to put a grounding system (rods) in the shed anyhow.

You need the fourth grounding conductor no matter what now. 2008 code changed, requiring ground always now, whether you have other metallic paths or not.

That's what I said Joed? Did you read the last sentence in the first paragraph? There are still twelve states that are still on 2005 and there are lots of places that don't have statewide adoption of 2008 in addition.

We're on '02 around here although rumor has it '08 will be in effect for the new year.
