Generator Hook-up Question

Main power to house, then to garage. Garage has a 220 outlet. I've been told that if I run a cord (with the proper wire and plugs) from the generator to the garage 220 outlet, and turn off the main breaker in the house, that the generator will power the house. Realize that devices used will be limited in number. Is this correct - and safe? Thanks.

RE: Generator Hook-up Question

No. This is not legal, or safe. It is how people get injured or killed. Have an inlet receptacle installed and a panel interlock kit or transfer switch installed. You will sleep better knowing you don't have to worry about killing yourself or someone else.

RE: Generator Hook-up Question

Thanks for the reply. I have the furnace supply cord set up so that it can be unplugged. If necessary, I'll run an extension cord into the house and get power from the generator that way. Funny, but I bought the generator 4 years ago and have never had to use it. Hope that continues. Thanks again.
