Buried UF cable

I have a friend who has a septic pump in his 'vault' in the back yard. It is supplied with UF cable that is buried and enters the pit about a foot under the ground surface.

This cable is not protected. The line runs very near (a few inches) from the edge of his garden and I am afraid that either he or his wife will accidentally hit it digging around in the garden. So I want to protect it. Is it all right to use something like schedule 40 PVC and put the wire inside? I believe there are two pair of 14-2 cables, perhaps 4 so would 2" be big enough? Distance is about 20'. Would they need to be derated?
